I'm looking for a Frank Holden Rex. Served on Aquitania during WW1. His service record states he was born 1890 in Dulwich, but I can't find any record of his birth/parents. Can anyone help. Thanks :-S

patchem Report 31 Aug 2014 14:40

Welcome to the boards, JFG.

Could he have been born Frank Holden, and later acquired Rex when his parents married?

patchem

Doesn't his record give the next of kin?

Not seeing it on ancestry

If he married the cert should names his father if known

Flip Report 31 Aug 2014 14:46

His record is on national archives, dob 20/8/1890. Could you say how you have connected to him and what else you know about him, it may help in finding his birth or ancestry.

Sorry, should have said it is royal navy record dated 1916, service number J62510 - these detail service but not nok etc.

I added this further up, then realised that his birth date, by coincidence or not, matched Frank H Rex:

England & Wales, Death Index,
Frank Halden Steane
Birth Date: 20 Aug 1890
Date of Registration: Mar 1977 Age at Death: 86
Registration district: Norwich Outer inferred County: Norfolk

i think we need JFG to return to the thread, as Frank Holden Steane marries and is on the ERs in the 1930s. We need to know how he connects back to him.

That is too much of a coincidence Pat surely it's a possibility. How many Frank Holden XX can be born same day?

Guys Thanks for all your input. I'm new to this game so you have confused me with talk of the name Steane. I am only looking for Frank Holden REX. I got his service record from another Genes reunited member and confirmed it by finding a record in the National archives. This record definitely shows his birth as 20aug1890 in Dulwich. The FHR I'm looking for is my wife's grandfather and shows up as being an actor from Dulwich on her father's birth certificate, albeit he [my wife's father] was born in Somerset. I've tried looking for a Frank Holden [as suggested by patchem] born in Dulwich but nothing shows. Is it possible that his birth was not registered?

It has to be the correct one.
On his service record on FMP it says his profession was Theatrical Manager.

Yes and on the 1911 census I put up he is a Music Hall Artist.

There is a picture of his mother on another tree on Ancestry and the writing on it says she was married in 1885 Camberwell Surrey to Wallace William Samuel Steane.

He may have used the name 'Rex' as a stage name?

Sorry Guys. BINGO Looks like you could be have been right all along. There's always been talk of a 'German Princess' in the family and looking at Mel Fairy Godmothers message it seem it could be right! And it is quite conceivable that Frank Holden Steane changed his name to Rex when he went on the stage. After all REX does mean KING.

Thanks again, you've all put me on a new family trace.
