brummiejan thanks for that, as you say very tempting - however the birth I found was for a Catherine Stewart Smith who was born on 26/03/1877 at Cherrybank, Perth, Perthshire and was the illegitimate child of Helen Smith, I believe that child may be the Catherine Stewart Johnston I am researching as on her death certificate her mother is named as Helen Smith.
Catherine Stewart Johnston appears on the 1891 Census for Scotland as residing at Orwell near Milnathort in Kinross-shire and is listed as one of several daughtres of James Johnston and Elizabeth Young.
Catherine Stewart Johnston died on 07/08/1893 at Orwell and on her death certificate her mothers name is given as Helen Smith a Domestic Servant and her father as James Johnston an agriculture labourer - so I don't think the Helen Smith aged 16 in the 1891 census you posted is connected - I hope that makes sense :-S

Possibly the Helen Stewart Smith you found birth of?? Maybe!

This looks like it might be the Helen above although the age is a bit out - it's very tempting isn't it..
Just thought the uncle's name of Stewart and (probable) sister called Catherine might link up.

rootgatherer - thanks for that, it could possibly be Helen Smith the mother of the Catherine Stewart Johnston born 1877 that I am researching, having said that, there were 2 or 3 families with the name Smith living in that area.

Is this the Helen you are looking at please?

alviegal thanks for that - the 1881 & 1891 Census is the family I have, the 1871 Census appears to be James Johnston before he married in 1877, and the 1861 Census is probably the parents & siblings of James - I note on that census James has a middle name signified by the letter S which could stand for Stewart.
brummiejan - the address on Helen Smith's birth certificate is shown as Cherrybank, Perth, Perthshire, it is a small village in the Parish of East Church and is located on the Glasgow Road just before you leave Perth heading west.

For reference. I can't find her or James with the name Stewart.

Time for my insulin and food - will check back in the morning :-)

Thanks safc - I think that maybe a different family or another branch of the family as the Johnston's I have in my tree originated from Dron in Perthshire and by the time of the 1891 Census they were all residing at Orwell near Milnathort in Kinross-shire - apart from Catherine of the other 8 children 3 were born in Dron and the other 5 in Orwell and they were all born between 1878 and 1893.

James Stewart Johnston and Elizabeth Young were married on the 23/11/1877 at Arngask in Scotland and they had 8 other children between 1878 and 1893.

Legal, recorded adoptions didn't start until the 20th century, and even then, records are not publicly available, for obvio09us reasons
If the couple took her in, they would have given her their surname.
It's a bit of a stretch to assume that the man was her biological father
Did he and Elizabeth have natural children?

I need some guidance on this one - I have a Catherine Stewart Johnston in my tree, she appears on the 1891 Census for Scotland with that name and it says that she was born at Perth in Perthshire, however when I search Scotlands People I cannot find a birth for her.
On the 1891 Census she is showing as being the daughter of the head of the household, a James Stewart Johnston his wife was an Elizabeth Young, so I had another go at looking for her birth but I still could not find it, however I did find her death certificate and that gave her mother as a Helen Smith.
This confused me a bit, so I looked on Scotlands People, for a birth for a Catherine Smith in 1877 at Perth in Perthshire and I found a birth for a Catherine Stewart Smith an illegitimate child born at Perth in Perthshire on 26/03/1877 to a Helen Smith - no father was given.
Birth: 26/03/1877 SMITH CATHERINE STEWART F PERTH /PERTH 387/00 02211877
Death - Death: 07/08/1893 JOHNSTON CATHERINE F 16 ORWELL /KINROSS 463/00 0024
Would I be on the right track to presume that Catherine Stewart Johnston is the same person as Catherine Stewart Smith and that her father was probably James Stewart Johnston and that he and his wife Elizabeth Young brought her up or adopted her, if adopted would that be recorded :-S
