Details of Annie's burial if you haven't already got it.

Annie M McCarthy age 44, wife of Andrew McCarthy, buried 23rd December 1921 Hunslet Cemetery, Consecrated Section 4 Grave 249.

There are 10 unrelated others in the grave, probably a 'Guinea Grave' there is a Memorial on the grave.

If you would like a photo of the Memorial PM me your email address and I'll forward it to you.

I've often seen many British born people write "British born by parentage" in that column on the 1911 .........

that is what it says in the instructions at the column head, and many people seem to have been confused by the term ...................... and thought that that is what they had to write.

So I wouldn't take it as absolute truth, unless you can prove that they were born overseas.

I wonder if Annie May was born abroad? The note that she was a British Subject by Parentage on the 1911 census could perhaps be because of this.

You say that her father was recorded as deceased but an Iron Moulder on her marriage certificate - it could be that this was an occupation he took up following a possible military career for example. If he hadn't served long enough he wouldn't be a military pensioner. Or he could have worked abroad as an Iron Moulder even.

On another note, I see from the 1911 census that Andrew and Annie's son James was born at Netley Hospital, Southampton. This, coincidentally, was a Military hospital, far from where a coal miner would be working. Had Annie travelled to see a badly wounded/seriously ill relative there I wonder? There is only the chapel left there now, set in what is now a lovely country park, but it was a huge hospital once upon a time. Last used by the military as a psychiatric unit (in buildings in the grounds)
