Joyce,

From what you have written, the files are not GEDCOMS (.ged) and I do not recognise them. Are you trying to copy the actual FTM software from your Vista pc to your new laptop. Is that correct?

I am not familiar with FTM.

Unless FTM is a very simple program - which I sure is not the case - I would be very surprised if you could do that. What you must do is install the software onto your laptop - from your original cd. If you purchased online and the software was downloaded into your pc (ie you do not have a cd) you need to download it again. For that you will need the product licence number/key which should be on your pc somewhere. Or on an emailed receipt.

Another thing:-
- The software that you do have may be out of date, due to later revisions/issues. Thus you may not be able to download it, but have to buy an 'upgrade' to the latest version.

TYPE:FTWFAMILY FILE

I backed it up from the F.T.M to my hard drive which goes in documents then i transfer it to the memory stick

i have copied another one a different name to a gedcom but they still dont work on my laptop

Joyce,

We may have crossed wires here.
What is the full name of the file that you are trying to copy.? Include the file extension (the characters after the 'dot')

Are you trying to copy Family Tree software onto a mem stick? This would include - at the least - one .exe file, plus a number of .dll files.
If so, I really doubt that it would be of much use, for reasons I will not bore you with.

Or is there a .ged file, which you would have 'instructed' Family Tree to generate and save to the pc hard drive?

If you can see the file (.ged) on your vista pc, then copy it to the mem stick.
Then do as Wendy does and copy from the mem stick to your laptop. Then import that copied file to your family history program.

Hi,

I save all my trees on a memory stick when I want to open them on my computer windows 8 I have made a new folder in documents and copy or move trees from memory stick to the new folder them open it from there.

Copy it first to make sure it works.

The detail (file) on your mem stick was surely not generated by the operating system, but by your family history program? Thus it should not matter whether your pc/laptop runs under Vista, 7 , 8 or 8.1.

Plug in the stick and look at the file list. Does the file that was generated show .ged at the end? (example myfamily.ged) If so, open your family history program and look for "import file", or something similar, which may be in a dropdown box.

When I lost all the family tree on my FTM 2006 I first went into a panic as it had nearly a thousand people on it

I remembered Then I had saved it a few months previously on to a memory stick

I opened FTM and then followed the instructions on how to download and it worked nearly all my tree was restored I had added after doing the memory stick so I had to re input those .

Since then I have done an up to date save just in case .

If the data on your memory stick is a gedcom file then I am pretty certain it will import into FMP using Windows 8. I use Roots Magic rather than FMP but my data successfully transferred from Vista to Windows 8 recently.

I hope this helps - just give it a try!

Check the FTM website.

They must have some sort of help section

But you may have to consider that something which you compiled using Vista simply isn't compatible with Windows 8
