Many thanks for this. It would be great if my ancestors were shipwrights in my home city of Leeds! Brilliant research guys. This wouldn't be the first surprise my ancestry searches have delivered. It's thrown up a mystery but gives me lots to work on! Hope I can trace my great grandmother somewhere. Thanks to everyone helping. :-D

Is there a birth record for my great grandmother Mary Jane Teall?

The enumerators of census will fill in what they 'hear' , and also be aware that the further back you go the less literate people were so spelling of a name can vary a lot.

John

John Report 25 Aug 2014 14:00

How can we be sure about the spelling of Teale and Teall? Where did it change?

Henry Teall
of Ringsend, Dublin

Son of Henry Teall (Senior)

1841 Started building ships at Brunswick Dockyard (Dublin).

1841 Marriage announcement: 'Jan. 22, at Ford, Northumberland, Mr. H. Teall, of Dublin, son of Mr. Henry Teall, ship builder, of Leeds, to Jane, eldest daughter of Mr. Robert Fluker, of Berwick-on-Tweed.'[1]

1846 Birth of son, Alfred Edward, 11th January [2]

1852: Hunt’s Universal Yacht List for 1852 includes 'Henry Teall, Ship Builder, Brunswick Dock Yard, Dublin. Established 1841.' The list includes seven yachts built by Teall, named Brilliant, Rover, Marina, Fairy Queen, Belle, Circe, Trio, from 8 to 60 tons. 'Marina' is described as being 'of novel construction, the bow being extended sufficiently to set the jib without the bowsprit, giving a much finer entrance as well as allowing more beam.'

1853 'Mr. Henry Teall, the eminent ship builder, has been appointed by the Board of Trade shipwright surveyor of steam vessels on the coast of Ireland from Dundalk to Wexford.'[3]
