his dad Reginald gill 1899 he was in the army think his regiment was called black and tan

You mention that he may have been in the Army in the Black & Tans. They were not part of the Army - they were part of the Irish Constabulary during the troubles in Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century. Many of them were ex-soldiers. You will find a lot on them if you Google.
Ancestry has RIC records but nothing coming up for Reginald.
