Has anyone any suggestions that could help me, I'm trying to find my grandmothers past the only information I have is as follows marriage cert. on 27/06/1909 Florence Margaret Barrow age 21 father Richard Barrow deceased occupation sailor, on her death 1973 it has her birth down as 18/11/1887 I applied for birth cert. no luck there. I can find Florence Barrow 1901 census inmate 49 Peel St. Toxteth . I have asked relatives about her past they all say the same she never spoke about her childhood she was orphaned at an early age we think she might have has a brother. I tend to think she was illegitimate. here's hoping someone can help. Carol

Looking at the image of that Census ...................
49 Peel Street, Toxteth looks as though it was a big house, with many other residences around, occupied by professional people.
ALL the "inmates" are young girls between the ages of about 9 and 16, and most of them are from the Liverpool area There is one "inmate" apparently born in Australia, and a few in other counties in England.
The only ones that are not shown as "inmate" are the following .......
Martha Twining 51 Matron of Institution Agnes McDonald 40 School Mistress Elizabeth Pemberton 33 Servant Ellen Steele 20 Laundress
Beatrice Spencer 16 Inmate Ellen Peak 11 Ethel Carter 14
I would suggest that this is a school for orphaned girls

AH HA
I found the first page for Enumeration District 071 .......... the district including 49 Peel Street
and there is this information ........................
Includes [the] Boiler Makers Iron and Steel Ship Builders Orphanage 45 Peel Street, and [the] Girls Preventive Home 49 Peel Street
so it was a Home and School for girls who might be in danger of ???? (something!)
Try Google!

As Sylvia has found it was a "preventive home", there also in 1891

I think Preventive Homes trained girls for service and domesticity
try this link, it refers specifically to the one at 49 Peel Street
