I had wondered about John instead of Ian, as rootgatherer suggests. |

Sometimes, in Scotland Ian (sometimes spelt Iain) and John are interchangeable. My nephew named Ian was named for his father John but given Ian to avoid a wee John and big John scenario. |

Flip thanks for this. i will suggest ian gets full certificate but unless it states different father details I dont think it will help with original query of finding father who might have already been married and run back to Scotland. thanks Patrick :-) |

Patrick, it sounds like he has the "short" certificate rather than the full one. It can be ordered from GRO using the details Margee has already posted - costs £9.25. |

Hi Margee Thanks for this I am still a bit confused . Apparently The child Ian does not have a full birth certificate. I understand the a birth cerytificate only has space for one informant . Therefore if there were two informants does that mean that there would be two birth certificates? cheers Patrick :-) |

I did check the originals of the 2 birth registrations in the hope that there might be a note attached explaining the situation. There was nothing. |

How reliable is your information please, it's just people fabricate or expand on stories as time goes by. Not always on purpose, but maybe they have thought it so many times they really believe it. |

If I were you Patrick I'd order the birth certificate - maybe Andrew was not Ian's name, maybe that's what his mother wanted to call the child. Also there are variations on the spelling Ian, so check it out. |

Patrick, if you look on freebmd you'll see the birth was registered under both surnames. And yes, for the father to be named he needed to present I believe - although I seem to remember somewhere in the back of my mind he could have provided his approval to be named on his child's birth but not sure about this. |

Hi Margee and Flip I am a bit confused by this Does it mean the child was named Ian A Martin as well as Ian A Baillie . Does it just mean that both parents present? how would it be different if only one parent present who just named the other parent.? Cheers Patrick |

Extending the search for a marriage for Ian Andrew Baillie, back to 1900, there's still none per SP. |

I guess the father attended the birth registration for it to be in his name as well as the mothers - did the certificate give any further information on him? |

yes I know the child born Wednesbury 11 April 1951 vol 9B P1102 UNfortunately I dont know the age of father so my birth range 1915 to 1935 is estimate . It could be before 1915 which could mean a possible marriage before 1930. |
