I am looking to find the name of my GG (William Bevan Todd) parents.
He was raised in Aberdare, Glamorgan having had his birth registered at Pontypridd but I can't find the name of his parents.
He married Margaret Ann Uzzell in 1902 and my granddad (Vivian) was their fifth child of 11

There's a tree on Ancestry which has photos of him, and says his father William died 1890 (as I've posted above), and his mother was Elizabeth Bevan.

But I don't see any marriage for them.

The tree says this is Elizabeth in 1871. Certainly she's born Monmouthshire, as was William B's mother, and she's in Pontypridd, but the tree doesn't give any birth or marriage record for her.

1871 Wales Census about Elizabeth Bevan
Name: Elizabeth Bevan
Age: 15
Estimated birth year: abt 1856
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: George Bevan
Mother's name: Elizabeth Bevan
Gender: Female
Where born: Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales
Civil Parish: Llanwonno
Ecclesiastical parish: St Margaret
Town: Mountain Ash
County/Island: Glamorgan
Country: Wales
Registration district: Pontypridd
Sub-registration district: Pontypridd
ED, institution, or vessel: 15
Household schedule number: 402
Piece: 5377
Folio: 62
Page Number: 51
Household Members:
Name Age
George Bevan 37
Elizabeth Bevan 38
Elizabeth Bevan 15
Lydia Bevan 8
William D Bevan 6
Isaac Parker 46

The tree also says she had two children:
William 1978-1931
John 1881 - ?

As per 1891 census in the institution?
The 1891 is the only "proof" the tree gives of John's existence.

The boys appear to have all been baptised in the industrial School but there are no parents names.

This puts them in the school before William dies.

Name: John Bright Todd
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 1887
Event Place: Aberdare St. Fagan, Glamorgan, Wales
Address: Industrial School

Name: William Bevan Todd
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 1887
Event Place: Aberdare St. Fagan, Glamorgan, Wales
Address: Industrial School

there is also this for Robert although I am not sure if he is the correct one even though the parents match.

Name: Robert Todd
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 1890
Event Place: Aberdare St. Fagan, Glamorgan, Wales
Address: Aberdare
Occupation: Hawker
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Elizabeth

Confused .com.
It seems as though George and Elizabeth could have had a Lydia 1861 died 1862

A Lydia 1863 married George Hyslop Pickering 1891 he died 1938 probate to widow Lydia and George BEVAN Pickering solicitor.

What I don't understand how they had a daughter Elizabeth Bevan 1855 who married Thomas Dobbs and is with him 1881 32 High Street .The time when she supposedly with William Todd at 62 High Street.

1891Cencus with George and Elizabeth Bevan is a granddaughter lena Dobbs 1880 + daughter Lydia 1863.

1881 32 High Street Mountain Ash
Thomas Dobbs 1851 Gloucestershire
Elizabeth Dobbs 1856 Trevethin.
George age 3
Lena Dobbs 1880 died 1902

Marriage Thomas Dobbs to Elizabeth Bevan Mertyhr Tydfil A/M/J 1877
1891 Thomas Dobbs a widow with son Geo Dobbs.
Elizabeth Dobbs 1856 died 1882 11a 348

George enlisted in Army 1894.He married Agnes Amelia Kite 1904 in Somerset.

The point being that the census returns above with Elizabeth Bevan 1855 daughter of George and Elizabeth and a sister Lydia 1863 could be the wrong family!!

William

William Report 7 Aug 2014 15:48

Thanks everyone. I think that William Bevan is a different family because Bevan was his middle name and Todd was his surname.

I did know about the boys in the Aberdare school and that they were baptised on the same day (presumably to get in the school) but that record doesn't state any parents.

He definitely had a brother Robert 'Bob' James Todd who lived with him and his family and he talks about his sister Lizzie in his diaries.

I did think that the Ale and Porter merchant was his father and that aged 66, he may have died and left Elizabeth unable to care for the boys which is why they went to the residential school but wouldn't they have recorded who his parents were? Newspaper reports at the time, show William Todd snr to have been a well respected businessman in the town.

And also, I couldn't understand why his father, having gone to the trouble of giving his son a middle name at birth, wouldn't then include it on the 1881 Census just two years later. This made me think that these William Todds were a different family.

(Thank you for all the research you have done and for alerting me to the thread)

Maybe if you sent for his birth cert and marriage cert it would give you the info that you need.

Please come back and let us know if you get any further with your search.

Do you have anymore info on his sister Lizzie that you didn't tell us about in your opening thread, also the newspaper info on William Todd Snr.

I don't know anything about Lizzie. I don't even know if she is an older or younger sibling. Or, even if she is a sister in law. His diary just mentions talking to his 'sister Lizzie'

I think I am going to have to get his birth certificate but I was hoping not to have to as I have very limited funds.
