George Medal for Frank Jackson

Is there anyone who can help me. My uncle Frank Jackson who was born in 1916 and died at woolwich england in 1964. We believe was awarded the George medal during ww2 in the Royal Navy. Can anyone find out why and were. Many Thanks terry

Just had a brief look for you using google - George Medal and cannot find Frank or Francis, but here is the list I found using Jackson:

Was he known by any other name or was he awarded The George Cross? If so I cannot see him listed, but there may be more experienced people on here that can help.

Alternatively, you could try using google and search under George Medal - you may have a better chance with the information you have and you could be lucky.

Sorry but he couldn't have been awarded the George Medal in the Navy it's for civilians only. The medal was created during the blitz for civilian bravery.

Is it possible he was awarded WW2 medals with other naval personnel and they were given to him by King George VI so the story got slightly corrupted with age.

I'd look to his service records to see what he was awarded.

Such awards were always announced in the Gazette or the Gazette suplements Terry - try here:

I did have a look but there are many entries in there for this name so you will have to trawl through an awful lot to find him.

If you had any idea at all of the date it would be a lot easier.

If you apply for his service records, you may be asked to prove that you are his next of kin

If he and his wife had children who are living, the eldest of them is the nok

As an update, have found out that the medal was a Distinguished Service Medal . and was issued? or won ? on the 1 Dec 1942. Medal no 35815.
I found the from a F Jackson, through ancestry, giving his service number as P/JX 136091. but cannot find out why it was awarded.

I tried the Gassette but can only find WW1 references, but that could be my ignorance on using it.

Terry. Try the British Medals Forum .....A complete list of the DSM Recipients by W.H.Fevyer published by JB Hayward and Sons in 2 volumes should give you the info.your after...The British Medal Forum site may just be able to help...
