this is what she posted in 2009

I'm trying to find information on my great grandfather John Walter Morley (possibly also known as Wally or William) who died on 7th January, 1928 in Hull. Various census information gives his date of birth between 1844 and 1847 with place of birth either Portsmouth or Hull. He was married to Joanna Marshall (variants = Johanna, Jane and Johanah) who was born 20th September, 1845 in Southsea and died in Hull on 4th March, 1931. John was variously a shipyard/smith's/engine fitter's labourer and latterly a publican. I would love to find his birth and marriage certificates or details of his parents and siblings if anyone has any information on him. Thank you. Jackie

and I gave that census then

I googled the name and a lot of info comes up that we are just going to duplicate.

It seems that his name was Morley but for some reason the marriage certificate says Softly. A mystery!

Having trouble with my mouse so can't C & P but there is a birth of a John Walter Morley in Sculcoates in 1886, ( died 1887)
so perhaps there was an earlier marriage? If so and there was no divorce maybe he used the surname 'Softly' when he married Joanna?

Do you actually have a copy of the original marriage cert - it's just earlier today on another thread the BMD index said Olson - but the image (especialley groom's signature) was Dobson. So could it be a bad transcription?

Also, have you compared the signature from the marriage cert to the 1911 census?
