You need to double check your facts. The marriage certificate is online and Benjamin is only 22 in 1924. His father wasn't James, it was Benjamin.

How do you know this? Marriage certificates don't list the relationship or the occupations of the witnesses.

Could he have died in South Africa, but seems unlikely he would work in a diamond mine in his 70s!

Are you sure of his birthplace? Probably won't affect things, but worth getting all facts as a starting point.
