Hi I wonder if anyone can tell me which site would be the best to find a death for a sailor around 1893-1898. As my grt grandfather was a sailor who lived in Liverpool but was born in Manilla and I cannot find anything for him on the ordinary death entries. I have a problem with the spelling of his surname but I am now at a loss of were to look. Thanks Carol

Hi Carol
Just try and keep to facts when you post back; names, places, dates, parents etc
Also, let us know what you have already found in terms of BMDs and censuses

Here goes: My grt grandfather was allegedly born in Manilla (1891 Census) and depending on which record you look at it was 1850/6. He married a Liverpool girl called Ann Jane Alexander in 1880 at Our Lady & St Nich’s, Liverpool I have his marriage cert and all the birth certs for his children but on all of these there are various spellings to his names: The IGI has it as Bilintine Bilawns, then, from the various certs I have they are as follows:
Ballentine (then surname spellings as follows) Bellarous, Belarons, Belarous, Bilarons, Bilarone. He fathered his last child Francis around March/April 1894 as Francis was born 27.12.1894, he was not registered as he died at 15 Days old, but I have his death cert.
His wife, Ann Jane then has a child born 12.5.1898 called Agnes, father shown on cert is John Daley. Mother shown as Ann Jane Daley – late Belarus, formally Alexander. This is where it starts to get complicated, as on the 1901 Census Ann Jane is shown living with a chap called John Daley and shown as servant/housekeeper to him.
Then on 1911 Census it says Ann Jane and John Daley have been married for 15 years (cannot find a marriage for this) and that 2 children born from this marriage, when in fact the other child Mary/Maria was the child of Bellarous as I have her birth cert, she was born in 1892.
On the Schedule for the 1911 Cenus it has been filled in by a Mrs Alexander (this was Ann Jane’s birth name), then Alexander crossed out and the name Daley put in.
As Balentine Bellarous was a sailor I assume rightly or wrongly that he may have died at sea, but reading all this he may have just beggared off. I hope this is enough info . Carol

Yes thats correct - I got a bit dis-heartened and not filled it all in - this was done a good few years ago. All the children I have there births, marriages deaths plus after a post on here by my sister, also years ago, met some 2nd cousins who gave me some pictures. My grandfather was John B - you will note he has two surnames as I was told by one of these cousins he changed his surname to his mothers maiden name, but they did not know why!! I never new him as I was only 2 when he died.

Thanks Ann but I have all this info - I tried to keep to the minimun when I was asked to post details. It's my great grandfather who is my problem trying to find his death - I seem to have got him narrowed down to a few years but don't know if he died on a sea journey or he just left her and beggered off.
I have over the years even phoned Newfoundland in Canada as they seem to have a lot of our records, but uless I can suply the name of the ship he was on they cannot help me + I wrote to the Philippines a few years ago to find his birth, but again they cannot help me - it's not for the lack of trying

Yes I have that - the first time I have him as allegedly being deceased is on the marriage of his eldest son William in 1906 and this marr cert says his name is Valentine Bellarus On my grandad's in 1906 he is not shown as deceased, and he says that his father is called thomas (that's a lie bu dont know why)who is a fireman at sea On Ellens cert in 1908 it says, as you mention his name is Valentine - no mention of his death but says his occupation is mariner? Then on Mary/Maria's marr in 1929 it says his name is Valentine and he is deceased and that he is a cook in the merchant service You couldn't make all this up could you!!

He might well have been Valentine - I think maybe Spanish was spoken in the Phillipines at the time, and in Spanish V sounds like a soft B.
Did wonder about this, though it's the ship not the birthplace which is Manila! Occupation is a cook:
1881 England Census Name: D. Valentin Bartinreu Age: 34 Estimated birth year: abt 1847 Gender: Male Where born: Spain Civil Parish: Vessels County/Island: Cheshire Country: England Street address: "Manila" Marital Status: Married Education:

Trying to define when your G grandfather was last known to be alive..................
Did he register the death of son Francis?
Have you checked to see if Francis' birth was registered with a different surname? His birth should have been registered regardless of how long he lived.

For Brummiejan I have heard that saying before about the Spanish V and B. on the 1881 Census for the wife Ann Jane, she is shown living with her parents John and Ellen Alexander, her brother William , and the son of Balentine and Ann Jane William A, but they are shown with the surname Alexander - this could just be an error on the enumerators part - the address is 54 Copperas Hill, Liverpool. Ann Jane is shown as Seamans wife and she did marry Balentine in 1880 as I have the cert.
For Gwyn in Kent They had 2 Children called Francis – the first one born in March 1890, father Balantine Belarous, seaman in merchant service, Mother Ann Jane formally Alexander, living in Upper Frederick St, Liverpool, reg birth March 1890. Then I have found his death/burial in Anfield RC Cemetary which says age 18 days address is given as 57 Upper Frederick Street. Then in December 1894 they had another son who they called Francis – I spoke to Liverpool Reg office and they could not find a birth reg for him, they said the birth was probably not registered as people had up to 42 days and, as the death cert states he was only 15 days old when he died – I think they were hoping to use the first registration birth if this Francis had survived. There was a corners certificate issued for his death which states accidentally suffocated whilst I bed with the mother – the address given was 9 Bolton Street for his death, BUT under rank and profession on the death cert it says son of Ballantine Belarous, able seaman of 6 House, 3 Court, Parr Street. I know Ann Jane could possibly have just been visiting and went for a rest/sleep. So this is the last time I have Ballentine as being alive.
