Two daughters of Joseph Pringle (son of William Pringle of East Farm) have just died in October 2013 - Betty Bradford Pringle who married Aubrey Stothard, and the youngest Audrey Pringle. The middle daughter Joan (Joey) Pringle married Stanley Porter. The son William (Billy) died in 1954

Sorry Alviegal, I completely missed the "East Farm" bit - of course it's him

alviegal Report 11 Jul 2014 10:22

That may not be him returning to SA but how many families of Pringles lived at East Farm? I think it is a pretty big coincidence if another family of Pringles moved in there and had a W Pringle, born 1885 visiting from SA.

Don't know if this is the correct girl who married William Pringle but thought worth following up:

Sheila, from what Alviegal posted on that passenger list she said "his last permanent residence was 'Other Part of the British Empire' ie not the UK." so that fits with a possible return visit but, having said that, there are other William Pringles back and forth between the UK and South Africa so mightn't be him.

It looks as though William jnr's wife remarried a Smith, this is his 1968 death record from NASA:

I don't know very much about South African records and the NASA website is not the easiest to navigate. It should be possible to order info on the 1928 divorce to see what info it may have. The contact details are probably somewhere in this link

Father William was known to spend all the money earned selling produce from the market at the pub on the way home. It got so bad that Mother would go to meet him before he got to the pub and take all the money off him!! Although she died in 1903 - so I guess the drinking carried on after her death as the article in the Morpeth Herald was dated 1905.

The 1911 Census is correct. The passenger list is wrong. I know that he left the UK long before he was 68 years old - unless he came back here for a visit and then returned - that is possible I suppose. He was never a "Watchman" though. Although he helped in the market garden business here it is believed he worked down a mine in S Africa.

As for my connection - the oldest daughter Margaret was my father's mother ie she was my grandma. I never knew her - she died before I was born. In fact my dad was only 11 years old when she died.

I've just looked at the 1911 census and the Pringles were at East Farm, Killingworth - I used to buy eggs there (not in 1911 before anyone makes any cheeky comments).

There's an article in the Morpeth Herald dated 20 May 1905 about the father William Pringle being exceedingly drunk in the Killingworth Arms (know the pub well). The landlord John Welsh was charged with permitting drunkenness on his premises.

Sheila, in your opening post you state he was a miner, but now he's a market gardener?

There's more than one William Pringle, and the info I quoted was from a tree on Ancestry and, as I mentioned, it was unsourced so the information is not totally reliable - who's to say that tree owner hasn't got their Pringles mixed up?

If you can give us some background info, such as how you connected to William then hopefully we may be able to find some firm factual information for you.

Sheila Report 10 Jul 2014 21:26

I do have some information regarding the Pringle family - yes indeed they were market gardeners in Newcastle upon Tyne:

Parents:- William Pringle (1850-1936) and Hannah Armstrong (c1856-1903)

They had 10 children:
Margaret (1879-1929)
George(c1881 - infant death)
Joseph (c1883)
William (c1885) *** This is the William I am trying to find information on
Elizabeth (c1887)
George (c1890)
Walter (c1893)
John (c1895)
Stanley (c1897)
Hannah (c1901 - 1907)

I understand that William may have had 4 children - Walter, John, Stanley and Edna.

From your info it looks as though he married and divorced and you seem to have found the death of two of his children. This is fantastic to hear as I have searched for a long time for info on our William in S Africa. No one in the family is in contact with anyone in S Africa at all, although I am sure that living relatives must be out there somewhere.

The William Pringle I mention above had siblings Walter and Stanley (children named for siblings?) but is the one who became a market gardener as AG posted above.

We really do need Sheila to give us more info .....

MarieCeleste Report 9 Jul 2014 22:24

According to a tree on Ancestry (unsourced) there was a William Pringle b 1885 Newcastle who married a Mrs Elizabeth Jane Oldridge. Had children Stanley, birth date not given, died 1984 Klerksdorp, North West South Africa. Also Walter Pringle born 1922 Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, died 2004 Adelaide, South Australia.

Let's see if we can unravel this .....

Welcome to the boards, Sheila.

Can you tell us his wife's name, please, and the children's names? It might help us to track him down.

What were his parents' names?
Do you know when he went to South Africa?
Any information may help.

The only William Pringle I can see on Ancestry who was born 1885 in Newcastle, grew up to be a market gardener.
There's one born in 1885, who's a miner, but he was born in Pegswood, Northumberland, and married an American-born woman called Kate in 1907.

The marriage of the Pegswood one might possibly be this one - but without more information I can't say if he's your William or not:
Marriages Mar 1907 (>99%)
Pringle William Gateshead 10a 1364
USHER Kate Gateshead 10a 1364

William was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in c1885. He was a miner. I know he married and had children - not sure if this was here in UK or in S Africa. Anyone who can solve the puzzle of my missing relative please?
