Looking for Canadian marriage

Anyone have some advise on searching for a Canadian marriage?

My ancestor Albert Edwin Wilks (b.1907 Birmingham, Warwickshire, England) I have found emigrated to Canada in 1926.

I have no idea his spouce's name or where he settled or what he did for a living. I've not ventured outside of the UK with my research yet. Are there any free research sites for Canada? Did a quick hunt via Google but nothing for the time period I am looking.

Thank you

Hi Clare, there's not an awful lot of free stuff on Canada. Even on paid sites there isn't as much as there is for other countries due to Canada's strict privacy laws. BUT - we'll see what we can find.

Just to clarify, is this him on his way out there?

UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
Name: Albert E Wilks
Gender: Male
Departure Date: 25 Aug 1926
Port of Departure: Leith, Scotland
Destination Port: Montreal, Canada
Ship Name: Cairnesk
Shipping line: Cairn Line Ltd
Official Number: 149412
Master: J T Berlin

He was a boilermaker, last address in the UK was 21 Grey Street, Wallsend.

Not sure why he would have been living Wallsend if born Birmingham, but if a boilermaker then Wallsend is the sort of area someone could move to for the work.

Just putting this in case the info is useful later:

Birmingham, England, Baptisms, 1813-1912

Name: Albert Edwin Wilks
Birth Date: 11 Aug 1907
Baptism Date: 1 Sep 1907
Baptism Place: Hockley, All Saints, Warwickshire, England
Father: William Wilks - Cab driver
Mother: Louisa Wilks

Address: 16 Paxton Road

This is the Canadian arrival for the outgoing list I posted above - the name and age don't quite match:

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Albert Edward Wilkes
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1901
Birth Country: England
Date of Arrival: 4 Sep 1926
Vessel: Cairnesk
Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec
Port of Departure: Leith, Scotland
Roll: T-14910

The occupation and address match the outgoing voyage, the next of kin in England is given as mother Mrs M Wilkes.

Hiya,

Yes that's him born in Birmingham - parents are William Wilks & Louisa Powell.

My late Grandfather (Alberts older brother) only remembered him emigrating to Canada and possibly marrying someone named 'Salt'.

No idea why he would be in Wallsend! That is further up North isn't it? However his boat to emigrate left from Leigh in Scotland, so maybe he found somewhere to stay en-route to work. Bit of a mystery that one. As is everything with my Wilk(e)s side - never found a marriage for William & Louise either!

However thank you for taking the time to reply.

Clare, those 1926 passenger lists don't seem to be your man - the age, middle name and mother's initial don't match.

Could you let us know what information you have to support your Albert Edwin having gone to Canada?

EDIT: He may have gone to Canada, but not perhaps in 1926?

As a general guide, births less than 100 years, marriages less than 80 years and deaths less than 50 years ago for Canada aren't easily available.

Oh no so the 1926 emigration record may not even be for him? That's a bit of a blow.

Guess it may be back to the drawing board with this one. :-(

I don't have a concrete date that he left England - just that he emigrated to Canada. I found the 1926 date somewhere along the way in my research. Just getting back to it after a few years off-line.
