LAURENS, Jean (John) and LEQUESNE, Jeanne (Jane)

It is possible that they did come to North America but a quick search of travel and immigration records through Ancestry doesn't bring up any probable Laurens females traveling here. Jane would have been about 55 in 1901 and Lavinia about 45 which would have made it less likely that they would have emigrated (I would think).

I will keep searching though ...............

The 1911 census for the Channel Islands is on Ancestry, however I don't see either of the daughters on it. Is it possible that they joined their brothers in North America?

The 1921 UK census has not been released.

I wish to express my thanks to Ricochet, Gins, Catherine, Margee, Polly, BeverleyW, Cynthia and, most especially, jerseylily for the replies to my query.

I did already have quite a bit of the census information, obtained via my subscription to Ancestry, on this particular family but was lacking complete dates of birth.

Would anyone be able to tell me when Jean and Jeanne and their daughters Jane and Lavinia may have died and are buried? On the 1891 Channel Island census Jean, Jeanne and their daughter Lavinia (Jane not mentioned living with them) were living at Handois in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Saint Lawrence, Civil Parish of Saint Lawrence on the Isle of Jersey with two servants. On the 1901 Channel Island census, Jean is living at the same location with daughters Jane and Lavinia and one servant. This would indicate to me that Jeanne died sometime between 1891 and 1901. Censuses for 1911 and 1921 don't appear to be available at this time for the Channel Islands so I haven't been able to determine a possible time frame for deaths for Jane and Lavinia.

The Adolphus that Catherine mentioned being on the Passenger and Crew Lists MAY be my Adolphus but I do question it because this person's age was 16 on the manifest.

The Adolphus listed as a "boarder" on the 1901 Canadian census could very well be my Adolphus as our ancestor Walter (his brother) was farming and living with his wife and children nearby on that same census. I cannot, however seem to find Adolphus on any previous or later Canadian censuses ---- maybe he was only in Canada "on business" during the time of the 1901 census. It seems a bit odd that he would be listed at a hotel rather than staying with his brother's family if that was the case.

This has been a very interesting line to research with many brick walls challenging me.

Dates of birth, all in the parish of St Lawrence

Philip Laurens - 17/1/1845
Jane Laurens - 18/5/1846
Walter Laurens - 19/3/1848
Lambert Laurens - 1/5/1850
Lavinia Laurens - 29/5/1852
Adolphus Laurens - 29/10/1856

St Lawrence marriage
5/2/1843
Jean Laurens, aged 30, bachelor, occupation Farmer, living in St Lawrence, born in St Lawrence. Father Jean Laurens - Farmer
Jeanne Le Quesne, aged 27, spinster, no occupation, living in St John, born in St John. Father Jean Le Quesne - Farmer.

The witnesses were Philippe Corbel and Nancy Laurens

Not surprisingly the parish of St Lawrence is overrun with Laurens, there are 2 likely Jeans both baptized in 1812 and another born in 1811, yet another in 1809 and none in 1813. Looking at Nancy Laurens (witness at the wedding) there are 2 of those and both have brothers called Jean.

14 Dec 1809 Nancy Daughter of Jean and Marie Le Gros
08 Nov 1812 Jean Son of Jean and Marie Le Gros

10 Sep 1809 Jean Son of Jean and Anne Rondel
23 Sep 1810 Nancy Daughter of Jean and Anne Rondel

I'm inclined towards the first pair but would need to check the godparents of Jean and Jeanne's children to come to a definite conclusion. This can only be done at the Archive and I probably won't be able to do that until next week.

There are a lot Jeanne Le Quesne's to choose from in St John but as far as I can see only this one with father Jean. The baptism dates fits reasonably well with a mid April birth.

01 May 1814 Jeanne Daughter of Jean and Jeanne Romeril

JoannePeterson Report 1 Jul 2014 03:56

Looking for information about Jean (John) LAURENS (b c1813, St Lawrence, Jersey, Channel Islands); d after 1901 census) and Jeanne (Jane) LEQUESNE (LE QUESNE) (born April 18, 1814, St John, Jersey, Channel Islands; died sometime between the 1891 census and the 1901 census) and their descendants. They were married, date unknown, somewhere on Jersey.

Children were:
Philip (Phillip), born c1846, St Lawrence, Jersey, died date and place unknown.
Jane, born c1848, St Lawrence, Jersey, died after 1901 census, unmarried on 1901 census.
Walter, born March 18, 1848, St Lawrence, Jersey, died January 3, 1924, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada; married; issue --- we have information on his family as this is our ancestry.
Lambert, born c1851, St Lawrence, Jersey, died as a result of a house fire March 21, 1909, Montgomery, Minnesota, USA. Don't believe he was married or had issue.
Lavinia, born c1854, St Lawrence, Jersey, died after 1901, unmarried on 1901 census.
Adolphus, born c1857, St Lawrence, Jersey, Channel Islands, died date and place unknown (although it is suspected he may have emigrated to North America as did his brothers Walter and Lambert).

Would especially like to know when and exactly where Jean and Jeanne were married on Jersey and exact dates of birth of the children are. What happened to Philip (Phillip) and Adolphus? Did they remain on Jersey, did they emigrate elsewhere? Where are Jean, Jeanne, Jane and Lavinia buried? From census records it appears that the Laurens family were well-to-do as Jean farmed his own land and employed servants/labourers.

Any and all information would be appreciated. I'm willing to share what I have on Walter and his (known) descendants.

Joanne
