My maternal 2 x great grandfather, Thomas Dickson, born abt 1784 in Hutton, Berwickshire, died 31 March 1857 in Chirnside, Berwickshire.

He married Mary Simpson. born abt 1793 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh, died between 1851 and 1861. She appears on the 1851 Census but not on the 1861 Census.

I would like to establish when Thomas was born and when Mary died. It would also be great to establish Thomas' father.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Arthur (Nicholls)

Statutory registration began in Scotland in 1855. Have you looked on Scotlandspeople. For a death for Mary between 1855 and 1861 please?

Rootgatherers info looks about right.
Thomas would be the son of David Dickson and Alison Hare who married in Hutton 1780.

Not only did he have a son named David but Thomas also has a daughter named Alison Dickson b 1819.
She will be Alison Ormiston on the 1841 return posted by Alviegal.
I can't find a Dickson/Ormiston marriage but there are 2 children on FS born to James Ormiston and Alison Dickson

Thanks for advancing my backwards research :-)

I used a professional genealogist to flesh out my mother's ancestors - I had little in the way of documents and her father died before I was born, her mother when I was 24 and not yet into Family History.

She was very good but only got back to Thomas. She did, however, provide me with a book of Hymnals written by Thomas - and reviewed by Rev. W S Crockett in his book "Minstrelsy of the Merse : the poets and poetry of Berwickshire : a country anthology" published in 1898.

In the review Thomas was described "THOMAS DICKSON was for many years schoolmaster of Chirnside, and a man of wide knowledge, great kind-heartedness, and deep piety."

Now I would like to find more about his wife Mary Simpson.

I plan to visit Chirnside later this year when I travel to Scotland for a discussion weekend (Alpines). Any advice on how I might research locally or will records be kept elsewhere.

Thanks again.

Arthur
