Hi there,

Is there any way of finding out more about this chap, aside from buying the death certificate itself?

My ancestor was a Sylvester McCabe from County Monaghan, whose son Patrick was born c. 1839 in County Monaghan. So, with the unusual name/dates/location, I initially feel confident that this is my ancestor but would like to find out more.

It is not 100% confirmed, but more than likely that Sylvester was RC.

It would seem that the M’Maths owned all the valued property in Lisdrumcleve.
The entry agains their own name as occupiers says ‘in fee; and ‘Turbary’. They occupied a total of 6 As, 3 Rs and 30 Ps with a total annual Valuation of Rateable Property of £3

Hi again,

That is wonderful - I evidently need to see if I can access RC records in Aghnamullen.

No, they are not Patrick's deaths as he died in England but thank you - I suppose there is a high chance they are relatives.

I know Irish records are sketchy but any chance of finding a baptism for Patrick and a baptism/marriage and burial for Sylvester?

Thanks,

Peter

I'll be honest - I really don't know Catherine but your research there is fascinating.

Actually, I suspect the Silvester leaving for America in 1829 is not my ancestor, as his son Patrick was born in County Monaghan according to the UK 1891 Census in c. 1839. Of course, he could have returned to Ireland. Again, the name isn't common but that doesn't mean I should conclude that all of the Sylvester McCabes are related etc.
