Newfoundland was not a province of Canada until 1949. It was a British colony before then.

The 1871 Lovell's Directory for St Johns has a ;

Charles Lang 'Cabman' Torbay Road

On another Directory for the same area 1864-1865 it states Elizabeth widow Charles Lang, so I wonder if James's father died and he went by his step fathers name until he married???

How do you know the details of his father, when you didn't know when the man married?

Roy

Roy Report 22 Jun 2014 05:31

My answers to above suggestions (in order)
Yes marriage was 1890 not 1900
Possible buried Ford cemetery will further investigate
Yes this is correct, I have census details 1901
Will follow up Royal Navy website
Don't think this is his wife as I have Anne Jane Riley.
Thanks for the info Margee
Charles Lang was James' father's name so this could be him. I did not know Charles' wife's name so Elizabeth could be it. I need to investigate further.
I will follow up if I can, Catherine
I have copy of marriage cert but no date on it. I believe it to be July - Sept 1890 (daughter born 1892). On it it records his father Charles Lang (deceased).

Thanks again

Roy

Roy Report 4 Jul 2014 06:11

I have found a service in Royal Navy when called out by proclamation which records his birthday as 18 March 1864 with parents Charles and Mary. Mary is a name in my family but there are no Elizabeths so I am assuming Charles and Mary are correct at this point.
