I have just got the marriage certificate for Thomas Weedon and Ann Hughes, dated 23rd May 1858. Thomas was from Watford and Ann from Elstree but they married in Shoreditch. They were both 29, rather old for first marriage, but bachelor and spinster.
Can someone kindly see if they can find this family on the 1861/71 censuses please?
I am fairly certain that by 1868 they are in Western Australia, witnesses at the marriage of my g-g-grandfather John Weedon, Thomas's brother, so obviously hope that they cannot be found in England in 1871. Of course, it's possible that they had already emigrated before 1861.
I have not been able to find trace of them or any children, though the name Weedon is prone to be mangled in transcription. I already have all relevant information before the date of the marriage.
Many thanks
Beverley

I think the christening that Ann has found above may be this family (but the parents seem too old to be "your" family:-

with Ancestry site being non-functional tonight I can't help with census searches just now

(but could you give the fathers' names from the marriage certificates, and/or say whether you have found the spouses in 1841/51 and where?)

but I'm wondering

I am in touch with some Weedon descendants from Hertfordshire, through DNA testing that shows we have a (rather weak) genetic match, probably from before the time of records and maybe before the time of surnames (my family in question is in another county back to 1500ish)

one of them has done a lot of research into the Weedons around Rickmansworth who also have Buckinghamshire connections

the other is in the United States and through her connection with him has likely identified her British roots as being a Quaker Weedon from that area who emigrated in the 1600s before William Penn led his colony of people from the same area

so if you think there could be a connection -- with Weedons from Hertfordshire there would almost certainly be one -- I could put you in touch :-)

edit, this seems to be your Thomas ?

Hello JoonieCloonie

That is my Thomas, son of Samuel Weedon and Elizabeth Thrussell.
Ann Hughes's parents were William and Anna Hughes.

In 1851 Thomas is in lodgings in Watford and Ann is the servant of the house (maybe where they met :) ) In 1841 she is with her parents in Abbots Langley and I think I have him (not 100% sure) in Rickmansworth.

My Weedons are from Hertfordshire and of Quaker origen though my branch of them left the Quaker faith. I have got back to James Weedon of Rickmansworth born c.1650. I think I recognise who you may be talking about, I would be interested and pleased to have more details by PM .

Thank you for looking, Ann, but I think Kath is right - Frederick Weedon is not one of mine. They were very unimaginative with their names. Thomas, John, James, Samuel, time after time.

Will PM you! I think we are probably thinking of the same person. :-)

Thanks!
I have made contact with a cousin (male) who is descended also from James Weedon (c.1650) but I don't know of any ladies (yet).
Weedon is a deceptively common name in the Herts/Bucks/Middx area. I am not connected to the Ruislip or Ickenham Weedons and have not found a connection to the Bucks. lot either. Mine were definitely Hertfordshire based until my g-g-grandfather emigrated to Australia, courtesy of the Government

got yr PM ... interesting story, as most family stories are, at least to those of us with the bug ... :-)

so this is Thomas in 1851

Name: Thomas Weedon
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1831
Relation: Lodger
Where born: Watford, Hertfordshire, England
Civil Parish: Watford
Town: Watford
County/Island: Hertfordshire

and this is Ann in the same household

Name: Ann Hughes
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1830
Relation: Servant
Where born: Elstree, Hertfordshire, England

always just useful to see the info as reported in a census, although the '20' may be a landlord's rounding

doing my best not to find them in 61/71 for you, and so far succeeding :-)

you need to prevail on that rellie of yours to spit on the stick ... important legacy for future generations and all ... and we might turn out to be cousins yet ...
