Find Ancestors

Hello, this is a bit of a long shot, but here goes! I am trying to find any infomation on my nan's father? I only have what is written on my nan's birth cert.

My Nan was born in 1920 in Fulham, her Mother was Janet Ellen Nicholls & is named as Janet Kane on my nan's birth cert, Father is named as ERNEST KANE, Janet & Ernest were never married.
ERNEST KANE occ is marked down as Engineers Turner? Ex Army living at Sulgrave Road Hammersmith.
My Nan has a different address on when & where born, it states she was born at Fulham Palace Road.
A year later Janet Nicholls marries Wilfred Warren in 1921 Eastborne, address on married cert states Sulgrave Road Hammersmith.

Can anyone help find more on ERNEST KANE

That 1911 census matches the address for the father on the army service records.

The only problem with the service record is that he said "yes" to just about everything - that he'd previously served in the forces, that he'd been an apprentice, that he'd been in prison as well as having been married. They've all been changed to "no", so perhaps he was just confused.

He was a labourer so doesn't match the occupation on birth certificate (unless it had been "enhanced").

Added - his permanent address on discharge in 1920 was the same as the 1911 (Copenhagen Street). He was at that address until the 1930s per electoral rolls.

He's at various addresses in Islington on ERs:

with Patrick Kane in 1924.
with Thomas and William Henry Kane in 1929
with William Henry and Walter William Kane in 1933
with William Henry Kane in 1934
With Gladys Kane. in 1951 & 1957,
Gladys E in 1958

Perhaps we've got the wrong man??

If he was "ex-army" on the 1920 birth cert, he couldn't have just been enlisting in 1920 - unless lying on the birth cert, as well as "enhancing" his occupation as MarieCeleste suggests.

But on the other hand, I can't see any other likely Ernest Kane on the censuses, assuming London-based.

Agree ArgyllGran - it's a bit of a dilemma.

He could possibly have been enlisting to get away from an awkward situation. Didn't work though as he was discharged as unfit due to appendix scar, knock knees and flat feet. Poor bairn.

If Jacks can give us some indication of when Janet Ellen Nicholls was born it might help. Although having said that there will often be age differences in relationships.

Its def food for thought! I have had a look at those Army records, perhaps it could be the wrong man as you suggest, not really sure meself!

If it helps I will give you some more info on Janet Nicolls, she was born in 1896 in Stapenhill, Staffordshire she was in Yorkshire in 1911 with her parents, but def travelled to London by 1920.

yes bit of a long story MarieCeleste have got all that info,
Janet married Wilfred in 1921 Eastborne, she gives her address living in Eastborne which turns out to be Wilfred's parents address, Wilfred has the same address as ERNEST KANE on my nan's birth cert,
Janet & Wilfred stay in the London area for about 13years, then my Nan marries & has her first child in Dartford Kent in 1936, states on my Nan's Marriaged cert that her father is WILFRED Deceased!
Wilfred died in 1951, Janet by then is back up in Staffordshire & remarries again in 1956.
