Hi Argyll Gran,
Yes I found this 1871 record - I presume it is him because he joined the Royal Marines in 1867 and left in 1879, even though the place of birth and age are wrong. Where does he go after 1879? It's a mystery. Why would he change his name to John, if in fact he does turn out to be my JK? Sigh....

Yep, safc, have all this. No problem with JK after 1881, have all his relevant records. Censuses, marriage, birth of son, death. The problem is before 1881. No John K's born East Newlyn (by the way "Newland Heath" on marriage cert I am pretty sure is a mishearing of Newlyn East - as I can't find any Newland Heath except an island off the north coast).
No JK on any 1841,51,61,71 censuses who could be him.
I still think that his appearance out of no where so soon after Mark K demobs and disappears is too much of a coincidence. This is why I am trying to find any evidence of MK post 1879. ;-)

Wow! Sorry for not giving more details on my original post! I did not know that all your efforts were here as I didn't realise that GR did not email you when a post goes up - as in RootsChat for example. Thanks Cynthia for letting me know.
Here is the story so far:
My current block is my g grandfather John Kempthorne. He appears in the 1881 census at Stoketon Farm near Saltash. He then goes on to marry my g grandmother Annie Bickle (nee Ellacott). After years of searching and asking for help, I have never found him. I chased all sorts of red herrings, including thinking he was the JK from Sithney (who went to Devon).
What I know about him: he said he was born in East Newlyn. His birth date would be somewhere between 1835 and 1842. He was said he was forty when he married Annie - the marriage cert has no father listed. He was working as an ag labourer in 1881. There are no family stories about him. I have full info on him since 1881, but nothing earlier.
This is where Mark K comes in. He is born in East Newlyn in 1838. Is in each census until 1861 then vanishes. I find, in the National Archives that he enlisted in the Royal Marines in Plymouth (after serving in the Royal Cornwall Rangers) in 1867. He seems to have been in Liverpool on board ship in 1871 although I can't verify it is him. He demobs in 1879. He then vanishes and I haven't found him since. His nephew Mark, along with many of his family, go to NZ but I can't find an emigration record for Mark. I found the others through the OPC emigration search.
He disappears and John appears. Same age, same birthplace, same occupation. Is it the same person? How do I find out?
I am wondering if anyone else is researching him or whether he appears in someone else's family tree? Kempthorne is not a common name, so chances are not good. So that's the story. Any ideas?
Thanks too for the work people have already put in.

Yes, you're right, safc.

In that case I don't see any sign of Mark jr after 1861.

I don't see the Ancestry tree mentioned by Gins, which apparently has him going to NZ.
There are records of at least one Mark Kempthorne in NZ - various ER's to 1938 (see list below), a marriage in 1897, a death in 1916, but nothing with his POB or DOB to confirm if the right person.

ER':
1896 - Mark, labourer
1900 - Mark (mill hand) and Letitia.
1905-6 - John (farmer), Letitia (married), and Mark (farmer)
1911 - as 1905-6.
1914 - Mark (farmer) and Letitia
1919 - Mark (farmer) [so the one who died in 1916 is a different Mark.]
1928 - Letitia (married), Mark (farmer), William Henry (labourer)
1935 - Mark (farmer) and William Henry (labourer)
1938 - Mark (farmer), Sylvia (married), William Henry (labourer)

His birth and death ??? St Columb reg district includes Newlyn:

Births Dec 1838
KEMPTHORNE Mark St Columb 9 67

Deaths Mar 1864
KIMPTHORNE Mark St Columb 5c 101

(On the Ancestry version, the surname has been corrected to Kempthorne by an Ancestry member.)

It doesn't look as if he married, so no direct descendants.

You'd have to buy the death cert & check the details on it to be sure this is the same person.

Oh dear, what happened to good manners? No 'please' or 'thank you' - it sounds as though Vivienne is being interrogated Reggie.

Hello Vivienne,

As you are new to the boards, it would be really helpful if you could please give us as much information as you have on this gentleman. This will give people an idea of where to start helping you. Thanks :-)

Not too much waffle there I hope Reggie.

I will now let Vivienne know that she has replies to her query. :-)

Hello, Vivienne -

Welcome to the boards.

You might be lucky, but it's not very likely that any of his relatives will just happen to come across your message here.

Try "Search all members' tress" (under "Search" at the top of this page), and see if there are any Kempthornes born in likely places, on anyone 's tree on GR, then contact the tree owners - click on "Find out more" beside the tree owner's name.

Do you need help with tracing his descendants (or ancestors) via BMD's and censuses? If so, let us know, and we may be able to help. Or are you only wanting to make contact with living relatives?

Hi Vivienne

Did he leave the UK and go to NZ?

A tree at Ancestry has details of him, you could contact the tree owner and also, search trees on here
