Haslington actually exists and is in Cheshire, about 2 miles from Crewe.

Where did you find the information about his birth in Haslington?

Kucinta Report 7 Jun 2014 23:52

If it's the chap who was lodging with the Clawson family in 1911 on your other thread about Clawsons, that census said he was born c1869 Bacup, and his occupation was felter on the census image.

Name: Samuel Ashton

Thank-you, Kucinta, for that explanation.

On that 1911 census, he has his birth year as 1869, but he is considerably older than the lady that he is living with as a boarder, so may actually be this man, born in 1865, and trying to appear slightly younger in 1911. Just a suggestion.

1871 England Census
Samuel Ashton Age: 6 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relation: Son-in-law Gender: Male
Where born: Bacup, Lancashire, England
Civil Parish: Newchurch Ecclesiastical parish: St John
Town: Bacup County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England Sub-registration district: Newchurch
ED, institution, or vessel: 5 Household schedule number: 74 Piece: 4133 Folio: 106 Page Number: 13
Richard Price 39
Alice Price 29
Samuel Ashton 6
Mary A Price 1 Month
Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 4133; Folio: 106; Page: 13; GSU roll: 846723.

Added:
On the 1881 census he is a cotton doffer, going by the surname Price, living at home, and still Price and living at home in 1891, as a Bobbin borer, and still at home in 1901 as Price a builder's labourer. Not obvious, as Price, in 1911.

Re Patchem's previous post

An Alice Ashton married a Richard Price in1866:

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1866

Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s)

PRICE Richard ASHTON Alice

Church / Register Office Registers At Reference

Hyndburn Register Office or Registrar Attended Preston RM/24/101

This might be Samuel, pre-dating the marriage, with a probable single mum:

Birth Indexes

Surname Forename(s) Mother's Maiden Name Year

ASHTON Samuel ASHTON 1865

Sub-District Registers At Region Reference

Newchurch Preston Lancashire NEW/38/64

Not sure whether it tallies geographically though - I'm very much a southerner.

It is not necessarily where he was born, but where he thinks he was born.
But about 12 miles, according to google maps and searches.
And in 1871 he was in Newchurch.
