My maternal great grandfather born possibly Scotland about 1847 or earlier
Migrated to Adelaide South Australia Austrailia date unknown.
Married Mary Jane Smith 14 Jan 1868 Adelaide SA Australia
Died 16 April 1900 aged 53 Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
Children - David Edward (Edwin), Charles Stewart, John (Jack) Alexander, Albert Edger, Alan Christopher, Flora Beatrice and Violet Lily all McDonalds
To the best of my knowledge going on places of children's births he was a gardener
This is as correct as I can make it not having many family records of living relatives to help in my search.
I would appreciate any information on his origins that can be found. Thank you.

Do you have the marriage certificate, what is his age on that and does it give father's name and occupation?

It might be worth your while adding Australia into your title to attract the members with better knowledge of/access to Australian records.

There are 33 OPR and 6 Catholic birth/baptisms showing on the Scotlands People website for David McDonalds between 1842 and 1848. There may be more unrecorded. And he may not have been born Scotland as you realise.

The traditional Scottish naming pattern for children of a couple may help?
