Hi anyone been successful in finding the parents of Matthew Morgan Clarke born c1833 son of Thomas Clarke and Elizabeth nee Morgan supposedly of Staffordshire? Not on 1841 census like you would expect, I even bought the qhole boxed set of Staff. 1841 census and checked the lot.
Love to hear from you.

could he have been illegitimate ................ born Mat(t)hew Morgan?

patchem Report 21 May 2014 06:39

When you say that you have not found them on 1841 census, have you looked for them individually, or just searched for the supposed complete family?

(There is always the possibility, whether he is illegitimate or not, that his parents have died before 1841)

Could you post on here a census that you have found him in?

Thank-you

He is in a tree on ancestry, having him die in Australia.

Do you know when he sailed there?

Astra

Astra Report 21 May 2014 07:14

A tree on Ancestry shows the 1851 for a Matthew Clarke in Warwickshire but that relates to this birth.
It also says that he sailed to New Zealand in 1851 but this Matthew is still here in 1861.

ah those Ancestry trees ...

the person in question in that one is

1841 in Monks Kirby Warwickshire

Elizabeth Clarke 40 grocer
Emma Clarke 20
William Clarke 20

Eliza Clarke 9
Ellen Clarke 3

1851 same place

Elizabeth Clarke 55 farmer
William Clarke 28
John Clarke 24
Matthew Clarke 20 blacksmith

Elizabeth must have been recently widowed in 1841 (daughter aged 3) but no Matthew Clarke death in Lutterworth reg dist registered 1837-1841

anyway yes 1861 in Leamington Priors

Name: Mathew Clarke
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: 1834
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Monks Kirby, Warwickshire, England
shoeing? smith

so yes, unless that Matthew was in two places at once, he is not the one in Australia

just adding the details to clarify what Astra said

yes, that is the baptism record Astra posted before :-D

Astra found it all, I just posted the details to make it plainer how that Matthew in the 1851 census was very plainly not the one who married in Australia in 1860 because, as she said, he was in England in 1861 (and his father was Matthew)
