Hi Samantha

What makes you think he was born 'at sea'?

Do you have any other details for him, family and where he lived?

Added:
Cannot see him on any trees on genes.

Can only see an American on quick record searches.

If he was English or Welsh, then his birth may not have been registered. It wasn't compulsory to do so until about 1873.

The name of Ohio does suggest that it was an American vessel.

I found an Edward Orrin on the 1870 US census who was born c1849 in Ohio ......

Samantha, if you can give us the source of your info then we may have a better chance of helping you.

ADDED: The Ohio record is for a member of the Orrin Brothers gymnastic troupe. They did come to the UK.

Hi

I am taking it from the 1870 US census - at first I took it to mean the state of Ohio, which I thought was an odd place given his family were in a circus based in NYC. His father's stage name was George F Honey. I found a ship's passener listing for G F Honey travelling from Havana to New York on the ship 'Ohio' in 1850 - the penny dropped, the age of Edward puts him being born in 1850.

That he was born between Havana and NYC however, now makes me think his birth wouldn't have been registered in the English indexes. Both his parents were English, but I wonder which nationality he would have been given? I'm guessing things were a bit informal in 1850.

The age of Edward puts him as being born before 1850, surely?

He is showing as American on that 1870 census.

If the father belongs to a travelling troupe, then was he always just based in New York?

Was the G F Honey on the Ohio travelling with his wife? Why would he use his stage name on a ship's list?

Do you have a name for the wife?

Thanks

Thanks, I have the marriage cert of George F and Zillah. They emigrated to the US in the 1840s. But travelled around a lot, their children were born all over the place.
