Hope the certificate is the right one for you James.

Your wife will be spoiled for choice if she wishes to shop while you are researching. The Scotlandspeople centre is located in the heart of Edinburgh on Princes Street and The Mitchell Library is at Charing Cross in Glasgow, just a short walk from Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Galleries and Princes Square.

Thanks rootgather. My problem is that I am in exile from the mother country and it isn't easy to get up there to spend a day in the library but next - wife can go shopping and i will go researching!!!!
Have ordered what I hope is my Dad's birth cert - hopefully it will simply be a case of the birth date is right but year is wrong 1925 instead of 1926.

James, by far the cheapest way to research Scottish records is to visit either The Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh or The Mitchell library in Glasgow in person. The cost of a days research is around £15 and you can view as many entries as time permits. Printouts of births more than 100 years ago, marriages 75 years and deaths 50 years cost 50p. Although you can't take printouts of more recent events you can view them and make notes.

Thanks for all the help from the GenesUnited community!
Yes I will need to buy the birth certificate and see where it leads to.
Will post next couples of week when and if I get any answers. Certainly plenty to be going on with.

There's no way round it, I'm afraid, James.
You'll have to buy either the birth cert or death cert (or both) to find out anything more.

I'm not seeing a Whitelaw / Milligan marriage anywhere in Scotland 1910-1940.

Nor in England / Wales on FreeBMD

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 May 2014 16:21

For the record:

1925 WHITELAW ALEX MILLIGAN M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0012

1925 WHITELAW JAMES MILLIGNA M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0029

The GROS numbers aren't consecutive, which would tend to suggest they're not twins, though it does seem odd if two unrelated children were born in the same year, with the same middle name and surname, in a small place like Whithorn. Maybe cousins?!

???
Death of James?:
1957 WHITELAW JAMES MILLIGAN M 33 IRVINE /AYR 595/00 0259

Death of Alex??

2000 WHITELAW ALEXANDER MILLI(GAN?)
mms MILLIGAN
other surname MILLIGAN
M 75 INVERNESS /HIGHLAND 240/00 0685

Having googled his name this has come up. No idea if it's relevant or not.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/47964/page/12184

It is names of personal representatives given in the probate of a Andrew George Grant from Liverpool. Nellie and Alexander Milligan Whitelaw are named.

Thanks.
Name is Whitelaw and got two hits at Whithorn 1925 - at work at the moment so a job for later!
Tried the deaths but didn't get a hit so will look again.

James, I am not getting anything for either Alex or James with the middle name Milligan. Is the surname Whitelaw or Milligan?

Did Alex die in Scotland? Can't find a death for him in England so looks as if he did. His death cert will give you his parents' names and as they married before 1938, you should be able to find their marriage on scotlandspeople and be able to view and download the image for 6 credits. the marriage cert will give you their parents' names and occupations. One death for Alex Whitelaw with MMN Milligan coming up for 2000

Only one marriage coming up and that is in Wigtownshire in 1904, a bit early perhaps for a birth in 1925 but not impossible.

James

James Report 15 May 2014 13:25

Up to now, sadly he is gone, his birthday was always been on the 7th April and was told his year of birth was 1926. Scotlands People shows two hits - Alex Milligan and James Milligan and the year as 1925 - does this mean he is has a twin?
Potty - I am a Scot and the thought of £12 for the extract???
Mike - date of death Nov. 2000 - can I get at it that way?

Potty

Potty Report 15 May 2014 13:13

His birth is coming up scotlandspeople - you would need to buy credits and order the extract which will give you his parents' names and the date and place of their marriage;

Have you looked for his birth on scotlandspeople site?

Do you have a date of death ?

Was he married to your mother ?
If so do you have a marriage cert ?
