Incidentally there is no Devon birth for a James McCourt around 1852.

Maybe he was born with his mother's maiden name?

Thanks so much everyone. Great to have those marriage cert details, PricklyHolly. It seems that Owen McCourt is more likely the father and that Barnard McCourt must belong to a different James McCourt.

Hi, I am trying to find out about an ancestor called James McCourt, possibly born around 1860, possibly in Ireland. I'm interested in finding out which county he was born in and anything else about the family.

I found an1871 census record for a James McCourt that listed the birth year as 1862, but I;m not sure if that's him. If it is him, his father is Barnard McCourt and his mother Catherine McCourt, both from Ireland, but no county given.

James McCourt was married to Mary Cole (I think it was in 1886 in South Shields) and he worked as a miner.

Their daughter, Mabel McCourt, was born in South Shields in 1888. I think they may have had children called Mary, James & Emma, possibly more.

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received. Apologies in advance if I don't respond to questions immediately but I'm in New Zealand and may not see questions until the following day.
