Welcome to the boards, Mark.

Have you got the marriage certificate of his parents to find out about their parents?

Do you know when and where they died?

Have you used the site (link below) for more information?

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Have you tried to contact people who may have him in their trees on here?

What are you hoping to learn?

Did you know your father?

Parents' marriage - if you buy credits on ScotlandsPeople (link given by patchem above) you can view the image of the marriage cert, which will give you info re their parents, ages, etc:

1927 MCCAFFERTY JOHN LYNCH SARAH JANE PARTICK GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/22 0012

It's harder to find you father's birth cert (or do you already have it?).
According to SP, there no Ian McCafferty (or variation of spelling) births in Glasgow in 1929. There were 5 John McCafferty's, but as it's impossible to search with mother's maiden name, and as they're too recent to be able to view the images online, you'd have to order each certificate to see who their parents were. I don't suppose you know which area of Glasgow he was born in ?

To repeat Reggie's questions -
what are you hoping to learn?

Have you lost touch with your father, and want to know where he is, or if he's still alive?
Or do you want to find out about his ancestors?

On SP, there are these deaths of men named Ian Stuart, born at the right time, but of course there's no guarantee that he died in Scotland - and he may well still be alive.
I'm assuming that you have lost touch and don't know where he is/was living. There are also several spelled Stewart - are you sure of the spelling?
Again, you'd have to order the death certs to check the parents' names, as they're too recent to view online.

2013 STUART IAN CLARK M 83 ABERDEEN /ABERDEEN 301/00 0460

2004 STUART IAN GIBB M 76 JOHNSTONE /RENFREWSHIRE 644/00 0180

1995 STUART IAN MACKENZIE M 65 GLASGOW, MARTHA ST GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 609/00 0692

There are also a few which list "other surnames", but as none of them is McCafferty, I haven't copied them here.

As Unknown is Mark Stuart, I would suggest that that is the spelling as far as he knows.

Stuy -

re your grandparents' marriage - a marriage on 31st December would have been registered in the first quarter of the following year.
If you've got the right names, then that is definitely their marriage which I posted.

As I suggested, if you buy credits on ScotlandsPeople, you can view the image of the certificate (and save and/or print it, if you wish).
That will give you their ages, and their parents' names, and you can then take the search further back.
