Thanks everybody, done some searching at lunch time and ship went down southern Ireland by U 48 commanded by Kurt Ramien. It took 41 ships down, the cruise missle of WW1! Amazing to see the face of the man that took out one of my wifes extended ancestors. My wifes Auntie meet Aunty Lizzy in the 1950s and she wore black and was very old fashioned, she was scared of her at the time, but she may change her view about her now?

Thank you that lucks right. Its the additional information that gives it away. I'll re-check maybe it was Williams father I found in the census records? Never realised he could have been recorded on cwgc. Thanks again you have saved me many hours research.

On the weekend an extended family relation, found family notes captured 25 years ago and passed them on. Extract of major interest.

"• Elizabeth married Mr. Ring – lived in South Sea, Portsmouth.
Children: Gladys, Bessy, Maud, Elsie.
Mr. Ring was lost on the 1st merchant boat in 1914 war but Elizabeth didn’t get any widows benefits because he was recorded as Mr. King not Ring. Times were very hard."

I already had Elizabeth Martha Ring (Rowland) (b 18/10/1879) on my family tree and today have discovered she married William Ring (b 1853 d 1914?) in Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1904, She already had a daughter Eve in 1901 census in Birmingham and William was a merchant seaman in Hampshire in 1901. The help I need is what could the merchant ship could have been and could I confirm this tragic error or people lost on merchant ships in WW1? Can anybody help me in discovery the possible injustice? I do have access to Ancestry records.
