Thank you, everyone - I am delighted to have had such copious responses, and I will be following up all of your suggestions.

Thank you, too, for your good wishes.

By the way, nobody told me this game was highly addictive!!! :-D

also keep in mind he could have been considerably older than you are thinking based on children born in 1580 ... he could have had older children as well, or just married late, or it was his second marriage

I have an ancestor with children born in the 1780s and 1790s

I misled myself for a long time looking for someone born in the 1750s or early 1760s

I finally identified his baptism (plus it was a variant of the surname, but right given name and right place and the surname variant does not appear in that place before or after except for an obvious cousin baptised same year - presumably an out of town vicar that year :-) ) ... in the early 1730s, so he was 60 when his last child was born

Edit.....Sorry didn't realise it was Scottish research, of which I know nothing, but maybe similar records are available for there?

From my 'crib sheet' records that you may need to look at to take you back from the 1500s.

Deeds (from 11c)
Feet of Fines (from late 12c to early 19c)
Manor Court Rolls (from 13c)
Inquisition Post Mortem (from early 13c to early 17c)
Lay Subsidies (from early 13c to end of 17c)
Quarter Sessions (from mid/late 14c)
Probates (from mid/late 14c)
Chancery Proceedings (from late 14c to late 19c)
Visitations (from 16c to early 17c)
Apprentices and Freemen (from 16c)
School and University Registers (from 16c)
Marriage Licences (from 16c)
Parish Registers (from early/mid 16c)
Bishops Transcripts (from late 16c to mid/late 19c)

Some may not apply to your research but I just copy and pasted the relevant period.

Records would usually be found at the relevant record Office so a search of their online catalogue would give you an idea of what survives.

You may also find various NA podcasts interesting and informative as to how to research back.

Good luck

suggest you use the "Search" facility - top right hand corner of this page to see if your people appear in any other trees on this site - if you strike lucky you then have the option to contact the tree owner through the site

no censuses in the 1500s :-)

Mary you are probably looking for records that do not exist

If you have got the other records (his marriage and children) at scotlandspeople or familysearch and there is no record of his baptism there, there may just be no record

I don't know about Scotland really but in England there are very few parish baptism records before the early-mid 1500s

scotlandspeople's early baptism records start at 1538 but those early records provide very incomplete coverage

a search there for names beginning Wil Park up to 1580 produced no results, in fact no results for surname beginning Par at all
(make the search 1580 to 1610 and there are 34 records with surname beginning Park)

Thank you for your reply, Ann. I had not expected to find a census report this far back; I was just rather hopeful that someone might have an idea where I might continue to look, as I seem to have exhausted all the normal channels.

Any idea what I might do next? Or do you think it's time for me to hire someone perhaps?

welcome to the boards Mary :-)

I've had a dig around the census and failed to find anything - sorry

Can anyone find a record for this man, please? He had twins Michaell & Robert c1580 and possibly a son John whose daughter Doratye was baptised 16 March 1602 in Berwick.

Michael married An Kimin in Berwick on 29 July 1600.

Any information to confirm any of these, and particularly regarding William 1560 so I can take my tree further back, would be really appreciated.

Thank you so much. <3
