My forebear came as a free settler with a letter of introduction from Henry Goulburn.
Some think he may have come from the London Hamlets and there is a baptism there
on 23 Oct 1791 At St Matthew, Bethnal Green with parents Edward Gray and Mary Gray.
He and his wife Emma and child arrived in Sydney in1817. Also listed as John Edward Gray. Can anyone help please?

thank you both for your help. I have been to the NSW archives but have no information before he arrived in Sydney.
Do you know whether letters of introdction were easy to come by or did you have to have connections?

not a clue - have you had a look for Henry?

all the Goulburn's seem to come from Lancashire - Liverpool and Manchester, so perhaps that's where Edward comes from?
