Find Ancestors

Hi this morning we discovered amongst family documents a patent application for improvements in apparatus employed in the manufacture of tin plate. the names on the patent are Josiah Richards and David Williams both of Pontypool in the county of Monmouthshire Thomas William Matthews and Thomas Picton Leather both of
?roughton Road Salford in the county of Lancaster dated 1875 No 935. there is a further date on the back of 10th march 1882. Have spent the afternoon trying to search and locate any information on the inventors. can find a Thomas Picton Leather engineer in the 1891 census in Bolton Lancashire, but with a year birth of 1859 feel he is to young- no joy at all with the others have searched & googled, names, inventors, tin manufacture no luck - does anyone have any ideas - they are not family names we know although we do have connections to manufacturing of tin cans!

Jane I don't think so he would have been 21 in 1882 and on the 1911 he is a mechanical Engineer. Tin plate was rolled I think and he could have made something to make the process easier.

1871 Josiah Richards, John Jones and David Williams leased the business, trading under the title of Pontypool Iron and Tinplate Co. Converted the Town Forge into a tinplate works.

There's an article in the Manchester Evening News of 12 January 1876 listing some parents who had not had their children vaccinated.

One of them was a Thomas Picton Leather of 7 Grecian Street, Broughton.

Might be worth trying to find that one in 1881.

Incidentally, none of the parents were prosecuted as they'd complied by the time the case went to court.

EDIT: I see the Grecian Street address is also mentioned on the Grace's Guide link posted above, so it was him.

The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser of 26 March 1892 reported on local board elections.

Mentioned on the Gorton ward as a Thomas William Matthews (engineer) of Nutsford Vale House, Newton as a retiring member.
