Can anyone tell me if records are available for patients who have ended up in a mental hospital or institution . I have a relative who disappeared of the census records and his wife is now described as a widow but I can not find a death for him . I am thinking he may have ended up in an institution or hospital in Lancashire and was buried in that area .

His name was James Howcroft born 1849 and living in Bolton in the 1891 census . I have found two deaths for a James Howcroft correct Dob but the wrong family purchased death cert to eliminate one , and the other one dies Broughton Preston around 1894 , I think there was a mental hospital in that area . Many thanks

No not that James Howcroft 8c page 347 ,got the death cert for that one and incorrect . Will try contacting Whittingham Hospital regards Julie

Daughter Emily married 2/2/1901 doesn't say dad was deceased .
Son Thomas married 3/8/1901 dad was deceased and on son Roberts marriage 18/4/1903 he was deceased.

1901 census taken 1/4/1901 Mary a widow.
