Thank you Margee.
I have just found a tree on Ancestry which has Dorothy Mildred married to a 'mystery ancester' of my husband's. (Clifford Shaw)
I thought I had 'struck gold' as he has been a long standing brick wall for me.
However, I have just downloaded a death cert which they have linked to Dorothy (death 1977) but 'that' Dorothy seems to have been married to a "William Ernest" Shaw so I am now not sure.
I have to go out just now but I will do some more digging on this when I get back.
Thanks for your help,
Dea Xxx

I'm back!
The grand-children are off school for Easter so we took them out for the day :-)
Thank you for the extra info Aviegal - Yes, that is 'my' Clifford.
I had the death info but not the electoral register details.
I get the impression that he was either seperated from or divorced from his wife when their 3 children were quite small.
That does look like the William Ernest Shaw who married a Dorothy Mildred Toussaint and the death cert from Dorothy Midred Shaw death which is mentioned in the Ancestry tree is therefore NOT the one for Clifford's wife who 'may or may not' have been a Dorothy Muriel MacArthur !! :-S
I have contacted the tree owner to see if they know anything else but am waiting for a reply.
It is such a shame that we are unable to look up marriages for around 1940/1941 in Canada as this would give me a lot of answers.
Thanks to both for your help,
Dea Xxx

You're welcome Dea. Shame we seem to be stuck now but I really think that the tree owner with that death certificate has gone down the wrong path with Clifford's wife. Perhaps they know more about Clifford though...? The other tree does seem to be well researched.

Dea - FYI everyone has full access to the 1921 census right now, but only via: http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=8991
I presume you've come across: http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Genealogy/BasicSearch although they're not completely digitized - if you come across one that's not digitized, check back in a few months time.
The following is handy up to the mid-1950s: http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php
Dorothy Louise McArthur 29/12/1909-27/1/1991, pob=Kelliher SK, widow/o George Edward McArthur, d/o George Jobin & Elizabeth Head so this lass: http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1911/pdf/e002096682.pdf
Her sister: Registration Number: 2372 Last Name: JOBIN First Name: JESSIE ELIZABETH MAY Sex: F Birth Date (yyyy/mm/dd): 1905 / 12 / 29 Place of Birth: LEBRET Mother ELIZABETH HEAD Father GEORGE STAFFORD JOBIN http://genealogy.ehealthsask.ca/vsgs_srch.aspx
I presume she's of no interest - IF I'M WRONG, POST ON THREAD.
Incidently, Comox is a pretty big electoral riding. To get from Roberts Creek to Comox takes a 60km drive, then a 60m ferry trip, then another 35km drive, and an 80m ferry trip. Roberts Creek is 20km N of Gibsons; Gibsons is a 40m ferry trip across Howe Sound to Horseshoe Bay, in West Vancouver, just across Barrard Inlet from Vancouver - another ferry trip until Lion's Gate Bridge was built in 1938.
The informant on the d.cert for Clifford Shaw is the public trustee. He's said to be single, b 9/7/1912 in England. He's buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. It's by far the largest cemetery in the province, and does have a view of the North Shore mountains including Mt Hollyburn, site of the 2010 olympic snowboarding events.

Thank you mgnv - I didn't know that I could look at the 1921 census and you have given me one other site I didn't have.
Yes - I do have Clifford's death cert and we came over to Canada a few years ago and visited his grave at the Mountain View Cemetery. It is a very peaceful and beautiful place.
Although a date of birth is given on his death cert., I have never been able to locate his birth registration.
The info on Comox and Roberts Creek is very interesting as it is difficult to judge distances just from finding the places on a map.
I will keep Jessie's details to one side for the moment as I am not sure exactly wo I am following until I hear back from the owner of that tree. They certainly have the wrong death for Dorothy if they have the correct bride for Clifford but I need to find out exactly what 'facts' they have before I continue.
Many thanks for your help.
