Elliot Report 1 Apr 2014 20:26

Hey guys!

Help with an address look up again, please!!!

1881 census, my great, great, great grandfather, Henry Leeds, lived at Norton Lodge, Norton, Kent. He was a gardener and so was one of his sons and I'm assuming that they worked at Norton Court, Norton, Kent, as they lived in its lodge house! What I'd like to know is, who did they work for? i.e. Who lived at Norton Court?

Anyone can search 1881 by address, sort of.

In Ancestry's census transcriptions 1841-1911, they only transcribed the addy in 1911, so this is the only one of their transcriptions one can search by addy.
However, Ancestry didn't transcribe 1881 - instead they use the old LDS/FS transcription. Probably the LDS provided the first transcriptions of modern censuses - they did UK 1881 (Scotland only available on disc), Canada 1881, and USA 1880.
The LDS 1881 UK transcription did give the addy, and this is included on Ancestry's records. One used to be able to search for it quite explicitly via:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7572

However, abt a month ago Ancestry "improved" their search, so now using places is a near-complete stuff up. But one can still specify Norton Court as keywords, and it'll find them - unfortunately, the keywords cover the entire record, so one also gets hits for Mr Norton, living in Hampton Court, for John Smith, born Hampton Court, now living in King's Norton, etc One might hope that specifying the residence as Kent would make the hits more manageable, and it does, but a better alternative in your case is to specify the piece # as 971. you can get this from:

For 1861-1901, a piece covers all or part of a Registration Subdistrict, in this case, all of:

Registration District 59.FAVERSHAM. Registration Sub-District 3 Teynham

Here we just get the 18 hits in the Lushington h/h as detailed in Shirley's post - I say "as detailed", although it's not quite true, they are seperate transcriptions, so there might be dfferences in transcription - the only obvious detail difference I see is Shirley's FMP transcription identifies Louisa Goldlaw as Francis's Ma in Law - Ancestry leaves this relationship blank.

FS now uses the FMP transcription for 1881 and the other year:
