Unless they have changed things back, I believe that they have removed the facility to 'untick' Ginns! :-( :-( :-(

It is a really silly system and totally unnecessary and newcomers to the boards are always falling into the trap of ticking when they have answered a post. It is very easily misunderstood when you are new to the boards which is why GR have been asked many times to remove it. But, it is still there and now cannot be removed once ticked which is even worse.

Karen .................

could you please not tick as answered posts on threads>

The tick means that your query has been completely answered and you need no further help. Consequently, other helpers will not look.

Unfortunately, a tick cannot be removed once it has been put in place!

Thank you Gins - No, I hadn't considered this Jane Scanlon as a possible 'Ann Jane Scanlon'. Looking at the 1851 census where she is enumerated at 79 New ?Birch St., I am inclined to think that she is a member of the Scanlon family next door at 77 New ?Birch St. - Owen, 60, his wife Mary, 50, and their children Thomas, Patrick, and Mary, ages 26, 21, and 19, all born in Ireland. Although Jane, 13, general servant to Mary McGlue, is listed as born in Liverpool, she could be a later child of theirs, born after they arrived in England (though I don't see this family in the 1841 census). There's another Scanlon family on the preceding page, also at 77 New ?Birch St. -- James & Catherine and their three children, all born in Ireland. Sounds very crowded!

Hello MarieCeleste, thank you for your reply!
I tried to check out the Connors but they were apparently just friends - they lived next door to John & Letitia on Luke St. in the 1841 census. More likely to be friends of John rather than of Letitia, whose family apparently disowned her (after all John got her pregnant very young, and possibly they didn't like his occupation or his Catholicism either). I got the ages from the 1841 UK census, the only one that Letitia was in. Letitia died 25 Sept 1845 of phthisis, age 23, at 5 Brick St, Liverpool.
This whole family is very elusive, perhaps because they kept going back and forth between England and Ireland? No birth record found for John, even his name unclear - Scanlin? Scandlin? Scandland? The only birth certificate I can find is that of Ann Jane, who then disappears from records. I think Margaret (my direct ancestor) was b. in Dec 1840 because she is listed as 6 mos. old in the 1841 census, but there is no English birth record for her. No birth record for Letitia jr. either - she listed herself as born in Aberdeen in two docs, but I couldn't find a birth for her there. She had no children - otherwise we might know more. When she d. in 1921 in Manchester of acute bronchitis, a widow working as a nurse, the informant was an Isabella Barnes, listed as niece. No idea who she was, perhaps niece of Letitia's husband.
Letitia Sr. was remembered by our family for a long time (too bad they had house fires and lost records) - Margaret named her 3rd child Letitia, and her son Thomas named his second child Letitia, too. This last Letitia died in 1963 in New Hampshire, USA. I questioned every older relative I could find, but they knew little about the family in England except for the disowning story, nothing about Ireland. Very frustrating.

Hello Karen

Have you checked out the marriage witnesses Daniel Connor and Ann Connor just on the offchance that they're connected?

For info: John's address was Jordan Street and Letitia's was Duckinfield Street.

As both their ages are given as "minor" have you assumed years of birth from later census?

Looking for ancestry of two people: Letitia MONTGOMERY, dau. of John, a bookkeeper - she was b. ca 1822, poss. in Ireland or N. Ireland; and John SCANLAN/SCANDLIN/SCANDLAND, son of Lawrence, a stonemason - he was b. ca 1821, prob. Ireland. They married 10 Oct 1838 at Saint Nicholas (C of E) Church, Liverpool; she was about 16, and 5 months pregnant; and he about 17. Acc to family tradition, she was disowned by her family. They had 3 known children: Ann Jane, b. 4 Feb. 1839, Margaret, bp. Dec 1840, and Letitia, b. ca. 1844. Margaret m. John BEIRNE/BYRNE/BURN in Chorlton; Letitia junior m. John FONE, also in Chorlton. It is not known what happened to Ann Jane. Letitia (Montgomery) Scanlin died 25 Feb 1845, Liverpool. Death date and place for John unknown. This young family is in the 1841 census for Liverpool, but not in any subsequent censuses as far as I can see. Families of their parents not found in any census. No clue as to where either partner may have come from in Ireland.
