If anyone can help. I have death information of Joseph Johnson Littlewood (My Great Uncle) of Oct 1911 death registration 1912 in Dartford Kent. Also showing death Oct 1911 in East Retford Workhouse Nottinghamshire age 43. J.J.Littlewood was born in Leeds 20/8/1868. He worked as a horizontal borer at an Iron foundry don't know where, but in the 1911 census it shows his previous occupation as a borer but he is now paralysed living Cecil House, London Road, Stone in Kent (2/4/1911). Not sure why he would die in a workhouse unless part of the old workhouse had a hospital? and which is the correct place of death. Here's hoping. Thanx Val.

Hi Val
Not sure what you are looking for?

Workhouses usually had a hospital which served the poor of the area, so your idea is almost certainly correct. Jan

I assume these are the two death records you mean, Val.
If you don't know which is your gt uncle, the best way to find out is to buy copies of both death certificates, to ascertain parents, etc

This could be the one who died E. Retford. That registration district covers Tuxford:

The overview/Family Trees in Ancestry shows J.J. Littlewood the correct info inc parents/his family, from his birth, then his death shows East Retford Workshouse seems strange his wife Elizabeth Hornsby (Lizzie) was still alive plus he had children, unless no one could cope re paralysed. don't know the other guy Joseph above. I think your right I will send for a death cert. Many thanks for your help. Val.

The Joseph Littlewood who dies in East Retford Dec Qtr 1911 has no second initial recorded, which would fit this birth and where he was living in 1911 Civil Registration event: Birth Name: LITTLEWOOD, Joseph Registration district: East Retford County: Nottinghamshire Year of registration: 1868 Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun Volume no: 7B Page no: 19
Joseph Johnson's birth has his names in full, which would appear to be the first name and initial of the man who died in Dartford - where he lived in 1911.
Civil Registration event: Birth Name: LITTLEWOOD, Joseph Johnson Registration district: Leeds County: Yorkshire Year of registration: 1868 Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3 Volume no: 9B Page no: 471
Not saying that he couldn't have moved, but seems unlikely and too much of a coincidence. Ancestry trees are certainly not foolproof, there are many that have granny born after grandson etc
A quick look shows his wife Lizzie probably died 1936 Dartford and all the children on the 1911 census probably married in the Dartford RD, so I think that would be the first Death certificate to try.
Edit - even the vicar can get it wrong - his baptism, shown on the Ancestry tree has Joseph born August 20th 1869 (baptised 26th Sept 1869 from West Yorkshire baptisms) yet the GRO birth registration is 1868!

Hi, yes dates are confusing Joseph J brothers my granddad born 1880 his brother born 1873 both on a baptism list for 1880. many thanks for your help. Val.
|
Val not uncommon for an older child to be baptised along with a new arrival in the family.
|
Understandable when as in some of mine anything between 8 and 12 children. .Val.
