AG - yes, I read the link. Actually, picking the earliest old map (1877) shows both schools. I keep forgetting abt Victoria County - remiss of me, but my excuse is half my rellies are Scottish (although the other half are English).

All is made clear, mgnv!
The Mission Room, on the north side of the Green, was the previous school building, as per the victoriacountyhistory link above, and the newer school is the one on the south side.

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and enter the coordinates 469600,190150 then pick a large scale map (1:2500) - 1921 is an obvious choice.

There's some info about it on pages 9-11 of this:

http://www.victoriacountyhistory.ac.uk/sites/default/files/work-in-progress/4swyncombe_web_social.pdf

It won't let me cut/paste.

Says it was on the south side of Cookley Green - unless when it was rebuilt it was on another site - doesn't say so.

http://www.kelsopaintings.com/JK_Paintings_Test_site/Swyncombe_L.html

There's also this:

http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-247580-the-old-school-former-school-approximate
Says it's on the north side of Cookley Green.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/dblock/GB-468000-189000/page/5

This gives a rough map:
http://www.mouseprice.com/property-information/ref-19411287/old+school++rg9+6en
and if you enter the postcode in Google Streetview the arrow will point to a house in the same spot, though you can't go past the front of it on Streetview to have a look at it.

But if you click on "Google Map/Street View" on the British Listed Buildings link above, it shows a house on the other side of the B481. You still can't see it - it's behind trees.

Hello Peter,

As you are looking for William Wybrow, have you checked to see if anyone on this site has him in their tree?

You can check by clicking on Search/Search All Members Trees above right.

If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner to see if they have any information for you. :-)

No Reggie I haven't asked about this before. To contact the Parish Council we are assuming that the Swyncombe in Oxfordshire is the correct one.

Have asked about this - or similar - before?

When I googled, and looked at a couple of sites with photos, they were remarkably familiar.

Get in touch with the Parish Council..............and ask them

Or contact the Church

WHY did you say you didn't know where it was?

Peter

Peter Report 19 Mar 2014 08:46

Yes Reggie and I came up with the same info as you.

I am trying to trace the headmaster William Wybrow. On 1911 census he was shown as Elementary Schoolmaster Assistant living in Ashford Middlesex.

I have a Teachers Registration form for him dated 1/9/1920 where he was Headmaster of Blackboys School, Uckfield, Sussex.
On that form it states he was Headmaster of Swyncombe CE School between 1915-1920.

That's all I know.

??

Swyncombe is a hamlet and civil parish about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east of Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England. Swyncombe's toponym derives from the Old English words Swin for wild boar and combe for valley or hollow.

Swyncombe today consists almost entirely of its Church of England parish church of Saint Botolph, the former rectory and Swyncombe House.[2]
