I have no idea if this is your George Sturgess but felt it worth posting, just in case:

Headline: NORTHAMPTON DIVISIONAL PETTY SESSIONS.
Publication:Northampton Mercury
Publication date:Friday 22 February 1901

There is an item about a George Sturgess, who was a shoe hand from Duston. He was charged with kicking a police officer who had intervened when Sturgess and another man had been firing a gun.

This George Sturgess was the father of 32 (yes 32!!!) children, all claimed to have been born in wedlock. 27 were still alive and 2 sons were fighting in South Africa. Sturgess was described as "laboured under considerable mental excitement".

There are a couple of items in the late 1880s about the state of your George Sturgess (snr) and the financial state of his business - not terribly good.

Don't know if this is of any relevance:

Publication:Northampton Mercury
Publication date:Friday 04 November 1892

Article text:"Herbert Whitlock, Henry Whitlock. Walter Whitlock, Harry Hurst, George Sturgess, Thomas Dawkins, and Edgar Buckingham, all young men of Lillingstone Lovell were charged with wilfully and maliciously damaging a cart, the property of John Hickinbottom"

The rest of the brief article suggests it was boisterous behaviour following an evening at the fair.

(Looking at the 1891 census some of the other lads mentioned were born in the mid 1870s)

Yes, I found this and thought, oh, right found you, only to be foiled by Eunice - by then fed up of George's trips to the south coast - marrying some one beginning with a t. I can't remember the surname off hand and having a daughter around 1887. She married under her maiden name of Clarke!!

Yes this is George. he described all his women as his housekeepers. He went to the south coast on holiday and came back with a new 'housekeeper'. In 1891 she was from Kent and then in 1896 he claimed Clives GGran from Hastings. He never married any of them!!

As far as I know he was just George. born 1874. There is another George Sturgess born around the same time who is related to the Warwick family who's father is also George but this family went to Derbyshire. I can't find any link.

I am trying to find George who seems to disappear after the 1881 census. He was born in Northampton in 1874 to George Sturgess and Eunice Robbins (Sturgess). I can't find him on any census or Bmd after this time.

Anyone able to help.
