Samuel Smith born 1849 in Hulme Manchester, son of Bracewell Smith and Betty Green. Sam also married an Elizabeth, probably around 1877. I can't find out her surname though. Looking on BMD there are about 6 elizabeths marrying a Sam Smith at that time! Is there any way I can find out which was 'ours' without having to order all the wedding certs? If I could just find one that identifies Bracewell Smith as father of the groom, then I can search in earnest. Thanks a lot.

You could order one of the childrens birth certs...if there is one that stands out as being their child

also some Manchester marriages are on ancestry...so could be lucky there if father is named

Oh, thank you both for the extras! Yes, Bracewell is ………. unusual . int it?! And when I was looking for him I found him in quite a lot of trees, and many of the male descendants have Bracewell somewhere, either as first or second name. I don't know any of the current ones though, so have not yet been brave enough to ask of its origins! Thanks for the Lancashire link Reggie, I will keep that one :-)

Wow! Thank you both for those contributions! Some interesting reading there. Again, Bracewell occurs so frequently, but I have not come across Martin yet although I will look him up now! Barrowford is quite near Colne geographically, and therefore quite close to Yorkshire; If Henry was a weaver at the time of his sons Baptism, maybe he was a journeyman, or just moved around looking for work. I am only just investigating this branch (of my husband's tree) so its early days yet.
Smith Smith, eh? Now that's a name in itself!
Thanks again, you have all been wonderful <3

You think Smith Smith is strange enough - I once followed a family from Lancashire where both the father and the son were called Fish Fish !!!

Surprisingly there were quite a few others over the years with the same name !!! ;-) :-D :-D
