William Higgins 1806 -8 Westport, (Oughan?) Mayo

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Driscoll Report 14 Mar 2014 19:41

William served in the Athlone 60th regiment from 1824, Portugal, Malta and home.
Married Margaret Crampton/Compton in 1847 Athlone and emigrated to NZ in 1849 as a fencible.

I see that his father is recorded as Richard, a tailor, but I can find no further information.
I have his information from his arrival in NZ, but would like to be able to find further information about where 'Oughan' is, and anything about his family. Could Oughan be Oughaval, Westport?
Did he have siblings? Where might they have gone? Can anyone find anything out about Richard and who he married?

Thank you.
Kerry

Iron Age (500 BC to 500 AD approx)[edit]

Territories were marked by tall stone markers, Ogham stones, using the first written down words using the Ogham alphabet. The Iron Age is the time period in which the tales of the Ulster Cycle and sagas took place. The Táin Bó Flidhais which took place mainly in Erris sets the scene well.

that's the closest resemblance I can see

Murrisk is part of both the Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes of Oughaval.

Yes Alviegal that could well be my tree.
Thanks for the info.
There are other families recorded as part of Oughaval, such as a notorious Charles Fitzgerald Higgins who ran off with some titled sire's English daughter…..but no idea if any connection.
Westport is a name that has appeared on a record, but Oughan clearly there.
Would love to find an ancestor or sibling of Williams, or Margaret's. They had their first daughter, Delia, in Ireland before leaving in 1849. :-)

Yes, I have the marriage details, and Crampton may not quite be correct as Compton is the family recollection in documentation…..so I keep an eye on both names.

I am pretty certain that the records for William, although it states Oughan, is actually Aughaval, Westport.
I have also noticed a record of a Jno Higgins in 1869 who was a blacksmith. In New Zealand a son of my William, also called John, was a blacksmith. I know it is a circumstantial thing but maybe there was some family history of this sort of work.
Just something for me to keep in mind.
What records are there for this area?

Aughaval, Westport is Westport, Co. Mayo or am I telling you something you already know?

I cannot see Aughaveal, Westport NZ (a beautiful part of my country).

Definitely Westport,Mayo. Thank you for that email address.
I agree that Westport NZ is one of the most beautiful spots in the World, but Mayo also is gorgeous. This is where The Reek (or St Patricks mountain) is.
Higgins or O'Higgins have some long history in this area, but I cannot seem to get further back, darn it!
