One of the possible reasons for stating 'full age' is that parental/guardian permission for the marriage was not required.

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Mar 2014 00:12

I wonder if Sarah was actually not dead when Maria and Mark got together??

That could account for the fact that they did not marry until 1875.

I note that the 1851 Census says Mark was 22 ............ which means that he was only 17 when he married Sarah in 1846, stating that he was of Full Age (which means over 21).

Lesley

paid witnesses were very common in those days.

It always pays to check other marriages on the same page of the Register.

the reason is very simple ........................ most people only got 1 or 2 days a year off work, Christmas Day being one of them.

It was often very difficult to arrange a marriage and have family or friends attend.

so there were people, usually men, attached to the church who would witness a marriage for a few pennies.

You will often find that the men will be church officers ...... for example, parish warden ................... or they might be men of the neighbourhood. Most of them do seem to be able to at least sign their names.

Thank you for your help.

In a million years I would never have given it a thought that two of the witnesses would have paid for the job.

MaureeninNY,
Yes…Those two chaps witnessed many marriages.
As to Mary Ann Chapman. Clearly written – by the Churchman. After the surname, and quite feint “her X mark”.

MaureeninNY Report 9 Mar 2014 16:49

Sorry.
Don't understand the point of looking at/for witnesses who are NOT related.

Mary Ann?? maybe...........

MaureeninNY Report 9 Mar 2014 10:26

Just my thoughts......

Anyone check the marriages post and prior? I think the gents who signed are your standard "pay to witness".

Cripes..not even certain about Mary Ann? (Chesmore/man).

Inky1 on most of the census Mark states he was born 1827.

Inky1 Report 8 Mar 2014 21:36

Yes the Church image shows Wink. Ancestry also has Wink as the transcription of the GRO record. The GRO image is quite clear.

As to the other witnesses:-
Edward (Edwd ?) somebody
William somebody - possibly Pric...tt (Looks like 2 x t's at the end of the name)

The marriage record shows Mark as 'of full age' ie over 21yrs. But per the 1851 details you provide, he was born 1829. Thus only 17 or 18 when he married?
