Diamonds-R-A-Girls-Best-Friend Report 8 Mar 2014 20:57

Could some kind person look at and help with the names of a marriage for me please.

Mark Rollinson married Sarah Wink...do you agree that is says Wink?

2nd November 1846 Finsbury St Luke Islington

Also I'm struggling to read the witnesses names the only one I can read is Mary Ann Chapman.

I have everything (I think) on Mark post 1851 but would be grateful for any help with his birth or the 1841 census

1851 census shows Mark with his new partner Maria Grew they married in 1875

Looks like Wink to me. One witness could be William Purcell or something similar.

Yes, I think it quite clearly says Wink.
The other witness's first name is William. His surname begins with P and ends in T, or possibly TT. [EDIT: Or LL, yes, Andy.]
Don't know about the middle of the name, though - it's quite faint

Inky1 Report 8 Mar 2014 21:36

Yes the Church image shows Wink. Ancestry also has Wink as the transcription of the GRO record. The GRO image is quite clear.

As to the other witnesses:-
Edward (Edwd ?) somebody
William somebody - possibly Pric...tt (Looks like 2 x t's at the end of the name)

The marriage record shows Mark as 'of full age' ie over 21yrs. But per the 1851 details you provide, he was born 1829. Thus only 17 or 18 when he married?

Inky1 on most of the census Mark states he was born 1827.

Just my thoughts......

Anyone check the marriages post and prior? I think the gents who signed are your standard "pay to witness".

Cripes..not even certain about Mary Ann? (Chesmore/man).

Maureen

MaureeninNY,
Yes…Those two chaps witnessed many marriages.
As to Mary Ann Chapman. Clearly written – by the Churchman. After the surname, and quite feint “her X mark”.

Thank you for your help.

In a million years I would never have given it a thought that two of the witnesses would have paid for the job.

Lesley

paid witnesses were very common in those days.

It always pays to check other marriages on the same page of the Register.

the reason is very simple ........................ most people only got 1 or 2 days a year off work, Christmas Day being one of them.

It was often very difficult to arrange a marriage and have family or friends attend.

so there were people, usually men, attached to the church who would witness a marriage for a few pennies.

You will often find that the men will be church officers ...... for example, parish warden ................... or they might be men of the neighbourhood. Most of them do seem to be able to at least sign their names.
