alviegal

I was just going to ask for this look up of this 1861 census as I think he may have been living with his uncle in 1861.
Detail of the household would help.

You're very welcome Creeky. Not finding him in 1861 though. :-( :-(

Creeky Report 8 Mar 2014 22:17

Yes that's him, just found this in my old data.
Samuel Henry THOMPSON was baptised November 27, 1839 - Parish of Trowell in the County of Nottingham.

He was charged with the crime of robbery with violence whilst in company with one Henry Corden on the night of October 24, 1861.
Samuel was aged 22 and a collier. On August 8*, 1862 he was found guilty and sentenced at Nottingham to 12 years penal servitude.

He departed Portland, England on September 25, 1863 as Reg. No. 7569 bound for the Swan River Colony aboard the Lord Dalhousie;
The voyage took 90 days with 89 passengers and 270 convicts. George Harvey and Mr. Fasken were the captain and surgeon respectively.

(* Think they have wrong date)

Samuel married Ellen Tobin on August 29, 1867 in Geraldton, Western Australia.

Many thanks alviegal

That certainly looks like it could be Henry's death.

Looks like Thompson could have been born Notts. or Derbys.

By the way think Cordon could have died in Nottingham Jail after the trial.

From report of trial (March 1862) .....
Corden appeared to be suffering acutely from illness. He coughed violently and seemed scarcely able to stand so was given a chair by the Gaol Governor Mr. Jackson.

(Deaths Jun Q 1862 - Corden Henry - Nottingham 7b 159)

Hello - thanks for that alviegal.

I had just been thinking of getting that but no credits left.
Any chance of Samuel Thompson he was born 1839/40 at time of trial age given was 22 yrs. also a miner.

Or am I being too cheeky.

:-)

Yes thanks Gins
I just had a look at that one but regret is not the rogue I am looking for.
Am trying to find what happened to a Henry Corden b. abt.1841 Notts. who along with a Samuel Thompson were sentenced to 12 years penal servitude in 1862. They had attacked and robbed one of my ancestors.

Have found Thompson, he departed Portland, England on September 25, 1863 to the Swan River Colony Australia.
Samuel married on August 29, 1867 in Geraldton, Western Australia.

They must have been free to do what they wanted?

Perhaps Corden never made the journey.
