This might be Rose:

Births Dec 1891
Greenhead Rose Camberwell 1d 960

Rose Goodwin
Birth Date: 27 Oct 1891
Date of Registration: Dec 1969
Age at Death: 78
Registration district: Camberwell
Inferred County: London
Volume: 5a
Page: 1628

The age shown on census is what they actually are at the time of the census. As most people have birthdays after the census is taken then the estimated birth year is usually wrong.

e.g. born Sep 1899, so 1 when census taken, so estimated birth year of 1900.

Wow .. thanks Dea & patchem..

I never thought to look at the ticket numbers.. so the plot thickens.. Just who was this 17 yer old Albert on the ship ?

I know that James did finish up in Australia he married a Florence Craft and had 5 daughters before dieing in Brisbane in 1964..

I guess I will need to keep chipping away at it until I stumble onto another tree that links up.

One question though.. on the birth and christening dates that you provided are all in 1896.. when on the census it shows that he was born in 1897 ... cant have a christening before a birth ¿ Or am I missing something ?

I am the last male on my particular line and would be interesting to know if I had any other living relatives in Australia ..

Thank you both so much for all your work..

You say you cannot find his birth reg. - I would think there is a good chance that this is it:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915 about Ernest Goodwin
Name: Ernest Goodwin
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1896
Registration district: Camberwell
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1d
Page: 909

Middle names were very often added at the baptism stage.

I can't see that he would have been a twin as this is his christening and if there was a twin, surely the other twin would have been baptised at the same time? (Unless, of course, the other twin had died?)

Thanks, Dea.

The image would not show on second search attempt.

I obviously stuck to the old ancestry searches for too many years.

Dea

I don't thing it is the same person recorded twice Patchem as they have different ticket numbers and different occupations.

In the 1911 census .. it says that there was 11 children born and 1 deceased .. but I have that down to a sister well before Ernest came along.. Jane 1879 -1881 and I can account for all the other siblings ..

Did he have an older brother that died and he took the same name?
So not a twin, but linked to another?

My mother (still with us) feels sure that my Grandfather was a twin...but I have never found any record of that (besides it would kill my tree) .. although I have never been able to find an actual birth certificate for him .. Albert was my grandfathers middle name.. coincidence ?

patchem

patchem Report 8 Mar 2014 08:44

I thought he had been recorded twice, once as Albt and once as Ernest?

Added:
But I am still struggling with the 'new' ancestry.

The other Goodwin travelling would seem to be an Albert who was a farm hand and also aged 17. It does not look as if they are brothers ??

Have you looked to see if any of your family are in trees on here, and tried to contact the tree owners?

My grandfather Ernest Albert Goodwin 1897 -1964 came to Australia ( Melbourne ) in 1914 aboard the SS Norsman that left London in January of that year. The ships passenger list shows him on there along with his future wife Emily Blades 1893-1965 who he apparently met on the ship.

Now for the mysteries .. Family legend say's that he was not traveling alone and one of his brothers was also aboard the ship (indeed there is another Goodwin whose first name I cant read is on the passenger list) and apparently there was an altercation with the affections of young Emily and the brothers had a falling out and never spoke again!

MY questions are.. who was this other Goodwin on board and where did he go from there ?

I have the 1911 census that shows my grandfather Ernest Albert aged 14 and two brothers still in the house .. James 1893-1964 who died in Brisbane Australia (most likely candidate) and John Thomas1892 - ? Head of the house was William Goodwin 1856 - 1913 wife was Annie Francis Goodwin 1859 - 1952.

Would be nice to know for sure what brother it was.

I would like to know what became of John Thomas Goodwin as well.. as I dont seem to be able to find anything about him.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Steve
