Mike.
Think you are probably right about the name. I had a Welsh friend whose surname was John. It´s very much a Midlands habit to stick an "s" on the end of a surname. My gran used to drive my mother mad doing it.
Marie Celeste
Thanks so much for your hard work. What you have given me sounds exactly right.

Regards Marion
PS Sorry about the mistake over Mary Ann´s age on her marriage cert.
Yet another senior moment.......all too frquent these days.
Thanks to everyone.

Both of Newport and neither previously married.

Morgan was a shoemaker and his father a labourer.

James McCulla was a labourer.

Witnesses look like John Coghlan and Mary Ryan.

Surnames transcribed as JOHN both on the marriage cert and census so perhaps Mary Ann was really John not Johns

Please check the marriage cert..............your statement that she was 'full age' does NOT match the info posted by safc

I must be missing something - which bride was full age on her marriage? Not Mary Ann because she was 18.

safc & Marie Celeste.
Thank you both.
Have the marriage detais, thanks.
1861 census looks a definite possibility
Will follow it up.

Rushing off now as weekend visitors have just arrived.

Not unusual for a bride to lie about her age on a marriage cert.
Maybe this is what he trees have based their info on when calculating her DOB.

wisechild Report 7 Mar 2014 13:25

Full age Reggie.
Have looked for her baptism too.
She says she was born in Wednesbury, but can´t find any evidence of that. I think possibly she lived in Wednesbury as a small child & has assumed that was where she was born.
I certainly never trust Ancestry trees & there seems no point in contacting the tree owners as both trees seem to have been dormant for over a year.
Suspect that Mcculla is not the correct spelling & that Morgan Johns may have been transcribed as John Morgan, but have had no luck searching that.
On Mary Ann John´s marriage details it doesn´t say that Morgan is deceased, but that´s really nothing to go by in my experience.

The reference to the marriage of Morgan Johns on the tree has a "c" before it ..(i.e. Approx 1850 )

The marriage in 1848 does not show an 's' on the surname.

Ancestry trees are notoriously unreliable - better to trust your own research..unless, of course, the person compiling the tree demonstrates that there is documentary evidence of his/her entries

How old was the bride in 1873?

Who witnessed the marriage?

Have you looked for birth/baptism info for her?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Mar 2014 13:15

What birthplace does it give for her on census records?

Mary Ann Johns married George Davis in Birmingham 1873. Her father is given as Morgan Johns, a bootmaker.
2 treeson Ancestry have her b Wednesbury, Staff in 1855 & her parents as Morgan Johns & Mary Ann Mcculla, married Wednesbury 1850.
Can´t see any evidence for this.
have found a marriage for Morgan & Mary Ann in Newport, monmouthshire in 1848.but can´t find any other reference to either of them in England or Wales, nor any proof that they are Mary Ann John´s parents.
Can anyone see them anywhere please?
