Can anyone help me find the correct Robert Chadwick c 1789 who was my gt. gt.gt.grandfather born around 1789 in or around Rochdale, Lancs. Hallfold is a clue to his whereabouts. There are just so many of them. He was the father of Robert Chadwick b1818 who married Mary Robinshaw in 1846 in Rochdale and Robert & Mary were then the parents of James & Robert (died young) & Ann Chadwick. I am decended from James. I have been searching for many years - it is such a common name. Any help would be appreciated. Betty G Chadwick

Ann, not sure about that marriage of James Chadwick and Mary Ann Butterworth - they would only have been 10 and 11 when Robert married - perhaps a little young to be witnesses.

message from poster
I have been researching the Chadwicks of Rochdale for about 10 years. It does not help that they all call their children Robert, John & James (oh and Betty, my name, after my gt.grandmother) !
I have a list left by a cousin of my fathers showing several generations of Chadwicks. I checked everything and it was pretty acurate (I do not put anyone on my tree I am not sure about ).
I have Robert Chadwick Jnr & Mary Robinshaw's copy marriage cert. which gives their fathers' as Robert Chadwick and James Robinshaw and the witness' James Chadwick & Ann Butterworth. 'Potty' says that they would only be 10 or 11 in 1846 at the time of Robert & Mary's wedding. Not so. I believe James was his brother born 1822. I have not checked if James & Ann Butterworoth married.
Robert Jnr 1818 disappears after the 1851 census and I cannot find a death. His wife Mary continues to put 'M' on Census forms and lives with their children James & Ann.
Robert Snr - There are so many Robert Chadwicks born around the time to be old enough to be Robert Jnr's father. One I am leaning towards is Robert Chadwick born c1789 married Jenny (Jane) Standring at St Chads Rochdale 2/2/1813 There are several children from this marriage but Jane/Jenny (mother) gives her name for each child differently - probably written as sounded. (Jane/Janney/Jinny/Ginney/Jennie.) Their 1st child :- John born 14.9.1813 (which fits with marriage date, they usually had a child within 7/9 months!) William born 1815 died 1828 Alice born 1816 ROBERT Jnr born Dec 1818 baptised Feb 1819 (my ancestor ?) James born 1822 (witness to Robert Jnr & Mary's marriage?- Samuel born 1824 Ann born 1826 IF this is the correct Robert Chadwick I think he remarried in June 1828 to Ann Mills and had another son Joseph Chadwick 23/2/1829 BUT if can't find a death for his 1st wife Jane/Jennie
HOWEVER after all this I cant prove if this Robert Snr is the correct one. There are others. I too have looked into the Robert Jnr living with the Leach family but this age is a couple of years out and despite looking for years I cant find the connection.
Hope I have not confused you too much - I have confused myself!

Hi Gary
I wouldn't worry too much about the age difference on the 1841; ages were rounded down to the nearest 5, so that Robert could have been anything between 20 and 24.
As to Robert being the son of Robert and Jane, I am not so sure. On the later baptisms, Robert snr is shown as a (Stone) Mason but on Robert jnr's marriage cert he is a Weaver.

Thanks Potty - yes I did notice the Stonemason/Weaver difference for Robert Snr. It is a real mystery. I shall just have to keep looking. Betty
