I've found Eliza's birth which was in Cheshire so don't think it's her in the 1871 census above.
Shirley - you could well be right about the influence of the penalties - at least it would show they were probably law abiding!

So it would seem she lived with Henry before the marriage and had Sarah .

It would suggest though that Hebert wasn't an Eastwood also for propriety sake she listed him as such .

It could also be she didn't register him pre 1875 even if he was Eastwood as she was unmarried . But with the penalties coming in for non reg they did reg Sarah

Possibly her in 1871 - on the image the "s" on Griffiths is crossed out:

That's the right family in 1881 and although Eliza says married on the census, Henry had already died on 28 January 1881 . Eliza died on 25 July 1882. I have both death certificates. When Henry & Eliza married, Eliza was shown as spinster.
I've managed to track Sarah from birth through to death, but she never married. Sarah was registered as Eastwood in Birkenhead to Henry Eastwood and Eliza "formerly Griffiths". Eliza's father was James Griifth (no 's' but not uncommon for Welsh names to add the 's') and he lived in Pulford, Cheshire.

Eliza is def 47 on the 1881 census so born c1834 .

Not seeing her for that birth year on the 1871 census

If she didn't marry till 1880 how would sarah be Eastwood on her birth cert .does her mum show as griffiths on that cert.

How old is Eliza on the marriage cert ?

Herbert married Judith Price. I have the marriage certificate and have found them on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. I think he appears on the 1891 census as a lodger in West Derby Liverpool as the occupation and age fit.

As it wasn't compulsory to register a birth until 1875, perhaps they/Eliza didn't bother?

On LancsBMD, there are no Herbert Griffith/s births for the time period. The only Herbert Eastwood ones are

Born in 1873/4 but it should be between 23 July 1873 and 22 July 1874 (based on his age and date of death shown on the death certificate).
In the 1881 census, Herbert aged 7 and Sarah Eastwood aged 4 were living at 93 Oliver St, Birkenhead with Eliza Eastwood. Both Herbert and Sarah are shown as born in Liverpool - Sarah wasn't as I have her birth certificate where her F is shown as Henry Eastwood. Eliza married Henry on 30 August 1880.
Henry is shown as his father on Herbert’s marriage certificate.
Herbert presumably ‘born out of wedlock’. I have searched Herbert under Griffith/s and Eastwood but without real success.
Any ideas about this please as I live over 300 miles from Birkenhead so can't easily go there.
