please can anyone help me find details for the Machine Gun Corp Royal Fusiliers for Frank Ensor born 1889 Hyde Cheshire Regimental number on Medal Rolls Index is 10018 9161 10018 This is on Ancestry but not on other sites. I had a photo confirmed for this regiment at the WDYTUR show yesterday. I would like to trace where he served but have no other details Thank you Pam

Nothing more than the Medal Roll that I can find.

It reads to me that he was in the Machine Gun Corps with Regimental No. 10018 and transferred to or was incorporated into the Royal Fusiliers with Regimental Number 9161 before returning to the MGC with his original number. Someone out there will have far more idea than me.

There may well be no further information as the majority of WW1 records were lost during WW2

Regimental diaries or Regimental museums may be able to help you further.

Hi
His medal rolls index card doesn’t exactly give much away does it, apart from that he was awarded the Victory, the British (or War) and the Silver War Badge.

However, looking for the SWB listing I have found the entry (original image) on Ancestry, under “UK, Silver War Badge Records 1914-1920".
The following info is given ...

10018 Cpl Ensor, Frank.
Number of badge & Certificate: B104 777.
22/11/15 date of enlistment.
3/12/18 date of discharge. Age 31 yrs 1 month.
Served overseas: yes.

The Medal Roll (not online but at the National Archives) might give his unit for Royal Fusiliers, which would enable you to look at the War Diary to see what he was involved in, but is unlikely to give it for MGC

I think the information you are hoping to find is what's contained in war diaries, however it is highly unusual to find the one you just happen to want is online. So, best bet is to try and locate his division and/or the battalion/company diaries.
First, of course, is establishing which battalion he was attached to!

War diaries are under the reference series WO95 at the National Archives which you can download for a fee. To mark the centenary TNA are starting to digitise them, searchable online. How lucky is that!
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/905.htm
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/war-diaries-ww1.htm

Elsewhere you may be lucky enough to find a few extracts from some war diaries online, as illustration to an article on a particular battle or campaign. Some are on The Long Long Trail, take a look at
http://www.1914-1918.net/soldiers/wardiaries.html

Only other place I can think of which is likely to have war diaries is the Cheshire Regiment Musuem,
http://www.cheshiremilitarymuseum.co.uk/

In reality, the nearest you're likely to get to finding when and where your chap went during the war is by finding the battalion/company's war diaries, and following them, which will give you an overview rather than specifics of your chap, because unless he did something particularly outstanding or heroic, it is doubtful he would be mentioned by name since he wasnt an Officer.

It's well worth reading these two...

http://www.1914-1918.net/whatbatt.htm

And very well worth reading this...
